I had a Hoover Convertible nearly the same...it belonged to the next door neighbors of my parents. Their house was always immaculate. She decided to get a new Vacuum, a Hoover Innovation when the new design plastic Hoover’s first came out. Anyway, they had nearly placed it by itself in a trash can with no lid on it next to the other trash can on the curb which was on the property line between our house and theirs. I mentioned they were throwing it away to my Mom and she said...I”lol call them and see if there’s anything wrong with it and she did...I was in college at the time but was on summer break at home and wanted to take it with me for my dorm room the next year. They said it was fine and she just wanted a new vacuum so they would be pleased if I could get some use out of it. I used it for those last few years and then disassembled it and stored it, when I got a job that took me out of state and moved out, I took it and had it at my first apartment, it lasted about a year and then began making a loud roaring while running that would gradually get worse...couldn’t figure out what it was, but at one point for some reason I touched the front side of the base and it was burning hot, on both sides. Found out that the roller brush bearings were going bad and went searching to vacuum stores for them and they all wanted $39 back in 1994 for a replacement...at the third vacuum store I went to in search of a cheaper price, the guy told me I won’t getter a better price anywhere as the price is fixed for that part. I didn’t see the point in putting $39 plus tax into a vacuum that I wasn’t crazy about and obviously had wear on it considering I could likely get a new one similar for $59 or so. I had the attachment set, but always felt they sucked poorly. I ended up trading it in at this last vacuum store for a used Electrolux Silverado which is still my daily driver to this day.
These neighbors also had a Hoover Celebrity some years before, it was light blue and did not have a power nozzle....I guess they felt the need for the canister and an upright to serve their cleaning needs. Growing up, I would occasionally see the celebrity and my Brother and I thought it was a weird UFO shaped vacuum! We were so used to Mom’s Electrolux Model L we had.
