Hey there everyone - I'd love to see a pic of the Hoover Model 961 - I haven't been able to indentify it in any of the pics I've seen on Stan Kann's collection. I know it's supposed to look like a large 541...in fact, any pictures/ads/info you have on the early commercial machines would be very interesting!

Also I've just taken some pics of the commercial machines in my collection, I'll post them here if anyone's interested?

Ive never quite figured

Why the 913 and 918 didnt have the protective metal grill over the Dirtfinder lamp- especially as they were UK made!

960

Swingette: I'm glad you like the 960 - I can't actually see a single difference between this and the standard 160...except that the bag is suspended with a hook and spring, not the retractable strap (this is probably because it's a late example). The spring hook is also positioned higher up the handle to take the larger size bag, as with the earlier models...can that be the only commercial difference customers paid extra for: a larger bag?! The 900 and 925 certainly boast a much larger number of improvements over their domestic sisters.

And Seamus, my guess about the 912 grills (from a previous posting) is thus:

'I suppose it's due to safety laws in the UK - without the grid, and with the bulb removed, it would be possible to touch the live contact plate in the bulb socket quite easily, as with the 160/262. With the 612, it's possible to touch the field coils by inserting a finger through the front cooling duct...all very dangerous, of course!'

No pics of the 961, anyone? I see from my list 23,744 were made, so it's surprising it's so rare! I suppose lots got junked when the agitator models came along...

vac-o-matic - I've never yet heard tell of a 912 cooking the liver of a census taker with fava beans and a nice chianti, but who knows...who'd be around to say?!

Jack, great collection, I love that commercial equivalent of the 160 as well! Would the 961 be similar to the 972, except (I'm assuming this since you mentioned the 541) with the tufted brushroll?

I've heard the 961 described as being like a large 541, whereas the 972 looked like a large 700...I've seen several pics of Stan Kann's 972 taken by people at this year's convention...but as yet, I haven't seen any pics of the 961 - I would have thought that being so rare, other collectors would have been keen to capture it on film? I certainly would if I had the chance!!

vac-o-matic: Thanks very much, I'd really appreciate that if you get a chance! It's such a shame I'm in the UK - I'd love the opportunity to see Stan Kann's collection in person sometime! Ah well, maybe sometime in the future...

sudsman - if you want I will do some videos of my cleaners in action...already on my website are videos of 2 of my cleaners - the 543 and the 700 if you're interested in those. The 700's sound is pretty accurate in the video, but the 543 sounds earsplitting (it's actually almost silent in use!)
