I am working on my first Hoover "Coffee Can" and can't figure out how to remove the fan/armature. Any advice?

when you remove the motor unit from cleaner there is a flat screw on the end of the belt pulley. you need a flat screwdriver to remove it then if memory serves the pulley should unscrew then you just pull the fan blade off. you will need to keep fan blade from spinning when removing the screw.
you might need a bit of WD40 if the screw is a bit stuck. but be careful not to strip the screw otherwise you might have a time removing it.

I know this because when my model 700 came from California I plugged it in and the motor made a humming noise as the fan would not rotate. A few days later I removed the fan and found the brass sleeve was missing.
I figured some dickhead that didn't know what they were doing tried to repair it at sometime in the past and never replaced the sleeve. The poor cleaner probably sat in a closet for years because it was inoperable. That would probably explain why the original bag was in such pristine shape, not much use along with California's dry weather.
There was however a blue cord on it. probably from a 50s hoover (638 I think) Lucky for me I had a spare motor from a seen better days 725 and I used the brass sleeve from that. When I replaced everything the motor and fan worked perfectly. It still does to this day.
Whoever tried fixing it in the past was most certainly not a qualified repairman (in my opinion anyway) as the brass sleeve was not worn down or damaged, it simply was not there to begin with. Probably grandma huckabuck's hubby tried to save money by attempting to repair it himself. when it didn't work they more than likely just went out and got a new cleaner then banished poor old 700 to the closet.
Now it looks great. I replaced the blue cord with a black rubber cord from the same period (JUST NEED THE ORIGINAL PLUG) to finish it off. Along with an almost unused tool set with the tubes and tools still in the brown paper wrappers, my old Bertie looks fantastic!!!!
I never display the cleaner with the bag spreader open as I don't want to cause undo strain on the bag even though there is no fabric wear or brittleness due to age. I would like to say thanks again to fellow vacuumlander PORTABLE for the replacement orange badge. It made a world of difference to the overall look.

Well, exactly 1 month of soaking in WD-40 finally paid off! Belt pully screw finally broke loose and I was able to remove everything to clean and lubricate. It was really rusted on... I'll be hoovering in no time now!

Of course! It's a 725. I was able to get the motor housing polished and the field cleaned last night. Tonight will be bearings and re-assembling the motor.

I got the motor all reassembled last night. However, the brushes are arcing excessively against the commutator (excessive is an understatement). I thought I had put them back in their original holders and orientation, but maybe I got them mixed up. I just ordered some cleaning/seating stones and will give that a shot. The brushes appear to still have some life left in them, and the springs seem ok, but that may be another thing to try. After all the trouble I went through cleaning and polishing this thing, I'm not ready to pronounce it dead just yet...
On that note, is there a place that sells replacement brushes that would fit this? I know you Hoover people have all kinds of secret dealers and stashes of stuff ;-)
