Hi and thanks in advance for any help.

I have a Hoover Celebrity S3193, uncertain of the age, but I think it's pretty old. A friend gave it to me over ten years ago, and it was old and used then.

I've been using it in my pet birds' room (hence my user name!) since then, and it's done what I wanted it to do. Now, it's blowing out pieces of grey foam from somewhere in the bottom (area can't be seen by opening and taking out the bag, there are screws involved).

I would like to get this back in working order because "modern" machines largely seem to be junk, plus the machine doesn't frighten the birds. They're used to it I guess; my "main" vacuum -- a Dyson upright -- is apparently a monster in their perception.

I am wondering if all you vacuum aficionados can give me any idea of whether it will be possible to get this repaired? I've been searching online, and think I've identified the "culprit" part via the diagram in my link.

It's #27 on that diagram, and they're calling it a muffler. Foam will deteriorate over time, and that's probably what is happening to this item. If I can't get a repair part, is it okay to run without it? (I am very doubtful about that, but with a name like muffler, perhaps that's all it does, though it would mean it was running louder). Looking at the diagram, it also appears to be missing a filter (#42 on the diagram). I had an odd cleaning lady for awhile, and I can only surmise she decided to get rid of it for some reason.

You may be thinking, why is she asking US? Why not just go to a repair shop? Because my experience with other vintage machines (in my case, a couple of sewing machines) is that many places will tell you that "that's junk, can't be fixed, you need a new one", so you throw it out and THEN find out that it was a line of BS -- they either didn't know how or didn't want to know how to fix it, not that it was unfixable.

The motor seems to be working well enough. The suction is good, the motor doesn't make any odd and/or strained noises. Of course, that could change overnight, but so far, so good. Dang, don't you wish that you'd bought stuff new 30-40 years ago and just stashed it away against the new reality of nothing but junk for sale? (Rhetorical question of course)

Anyone have any comments or advice for me?

It sounds like either part of the pre-motor filter got sucked into the fan, or more likely, the post-motor filter is brittle and being blow out. It would help you could post a picture inside the bag camber and underneath the machine so we can see exactly what the filters look like.

After doing some searching online, it looks like Hoover has discontinued both the pre and post motor filter. In the case that you do need to replace the filters, I'd suggest using Miele Airclean filters as a replacement. They should be large enough to replace both filters.

I wouldn't worry about it

The QS "Quiet Series" Celebrities all have this problem. You are correct the foam muffler deteriorates over time and is blown out because it is located directly under the exhaust. The only difference that you will notice is the vacuum may become a little louder, that’s it!

The Celebrities are wonderful canisters. I have two in my collection.

Yay!

Thanks for the info. I noticed this happening on my Celebrity, too!

Little pieces of grey foam on the floor after I finished vacuuming made me think I was going crazy, which, incidentally, is not a far way to go. LOL

Yeah, it's not that big of a deal to replace. If you remove it altogether, the machine will just be noisier. I think there are maybe 3 nuts that you need to undo in order for the bottom "pan" to drop off. At work, our printer toner comes wrapped in a grey foam that's similar to what was in the Celebrity. I've just cut a new one, glued it in place, and re-assembled the machine. Any type of foam should work -- just make sure it's porous enough that air can escape -- it is the exhaust air, after all. Impeding it too much could cause the motor to overheat.

Hoover Celebrity QS Series S3187

Here's a Hoover Celebrity I won on eBay.

Its a Model S3187

Serial #00034119

How old is this vac? It doesn't have the date on the SN.

Is this how the tools store on the cleaner? My other Celebrity had a different style top. Is this model supposed to have only one speed? It's missing the bag check indicator. Hose is still in good shape & very flexible.

Can I use a HEPA motor filter on these vacs? Here's a link to the HEPA filter.

Rug tool. Very nice feature to switch from full width vacing to left or right edge vacing only. Good for vacing stubborn corners.

Can I use Hoover HEPA "S" bags on the Celebrity?

Close-up of data plate; its the best pic I could get because camera keeps shutting down.

The Celebrity's cord always seems to retract w/o pressing the cord retract button. Is there a way to fix that problem?

Also, one of the casters don't seem to rotate, so after I clean the vac, I'll oil the casters.

I'M SO EXCITED TO HAVE A CELEBRITY AGAIN! :)
