Hoover Baby Model 103

I received this 103 a few days ago. The bag and cord were bad. It runs really well.

Great find! I thought it looked familiar, so I went back in my browser history and I got to looking at the serial #, this is the same one I seen on eBay! https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pat-1921-1...g_cvip=true&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nordt=true

Did you put a new motor on it or was that hidden under all the dirt?

Hello huskyvacs and scoover,
Yes, it is the Hoover 103 that was on eBay a few days ago. I just cleaned it up a bit and for some reason the motor paint was near perfect. I then spent a bit more time polishing the brass name plate on the motor.
Replace the carbon brushes and it had a mismatched set of carbon brush springs so I replace them. Cleaned old oil residue off the commutator then used carbon brush seater and commutator cleaner It now runs and sounds really good with no bearing noise.
As I said I have replace the cord and bag. I still need to put the Edison plug with its spring cord protector on the replaced cord. Please know that it did not have a brush roll but I believe it is the same as a 102. I guess it will share the brush roll with the my 102 for now.
I also bought the Hoover 105 that was on eBay at about the same time. They did pictured the underside on the 105 on eBay but what a surprise when I received it as the brush roll was like new as I have pictured.
My 102 I believe it was originally a Farm Voltage machine and when the Farm changed over to 110 Volts the motor was replace by the Hoover Salesman. This is just speculation on my part and cannot be proven. It runs great but I have not replaced the cord as of yet

It cleaned up really good! Yeah the fact that that tag on the motor has a blank spot to stamp in the voltage number makes me think it was a universal motor. It looks like the population of the city it came from, Granite City, IL, only had just over 9,000 people by 1910 and afterwards until 1920, so it does look like it was a farming town and they would have not had Edison service until later on.

The Bee Vac I have, it had a similar story, it is on DC farm voltage, and it came from a very Amish-centric town in Wisconsin with a population barely of 10,000.

Saw that 105 too. I like to look but like I say wrong side of the pond... Great early Hoovers. More power to your elbow Phaeton!
