I remember these being on the market in the UK with the Aquamasters. They always looked like great machines. They had a pump for the shampoo right?..
 
Interesting looking machine. Of course we had nothing like this in the US. Reminds me a little of the Thermax, but not nearly as bulky. Thermax started out as a hot water extraction carpet cleaner (they invented the process), and a very good one. But then they decided they could fill the recovery tank with water, add some cheap generic attachments, and sell it as a water filtration vacuum. Most of their sales force are disaffected former Rainbow dealers because the sales pitch, if not the machine, is similar. What does this Hoover use to collect the dirt?
 
I think it used bags, I imagine so..water filtration never really caught on in this country.

I still love Rainbow! They seem good, but WAY too expensive! My R'bow D does a great job! Thanks to Toby, I have all of the attachments and original hose, so I can use it without feeling bad about the attachments! :-P How does everyone else feel about the effectiveness of a water vacuum? Does it really filter the air as well as R'bow says it does? And if it does, why a HEPA filter? These are questions I have always sought answers to...

The Rainbow "E" series machines were equipped with the HEPA filters because the water main filter will not trap matererial not wetted or dissolved in water-ashes,face powder,plaster dust.the Rainbow owners manual included with these vacuums cautions users not to pick up large amounts of these at a time-otherwise could clog the HEPA filter.The Rainbow Hepa filter can be cleaned or washed a few times before it has to be replaced.I remember a Kiurby demonstration for a G4-done at my place-The Kirby saleperson had a Rainbow D4 vacuum in his car he says he recienved as a trade in toward a Kirby.He demoed the Kirby vacuum and then pointed out the inabilities of the water trap filter on some materials-He used face powder-talcium powder.He put some on the floor and vacuumed it with the Kirby-Then he got out the Rainbow-took it out to the rear porch and vacuumed up some of the same face powder-shortly after you could see the powder blowing out of the exhaust of the Rainbow-He then asked the Simple question--"Would you want to try to clean your home with this vacuum cleaner?"
 
From what I remember hearing, the Aquatronic wasn't made by hoover..rather some posh one-off swedish company (I forget the name of it mind :( ) very good quality I believe.

Hello all

Just joined up to the website. Something to do on a boring Saturday night I guess! LOL!

I think the Aquatronic first appeared around 1986/1987 in the UK. I have a leaflet too, but no scanner, so can't post it. Will check to see if there's a date on it tomorrow and confirm.

You're very lucky Mark,

I have never, ever seen one of these. Is there some mechanism to prevent dirty water reaching the motor if the cleaner is tipped on its end? I would have thought that a multipurpose cleaner that didn't look like a plastic dustbin would have been far more popular than the Aquatronic was.
