It's always a good feeling when you can find one of the machines on your wish list, and here's one I can scratch off of mine! I've always wanted a model 51 Hoover Aerodyne for my collection, and I found this one on ebay. I bid on it, and turned out to be the only bid, and it's here in Ohio, so it shouldn't take long to get here. As you can see from this picture from the ebay listing, it's going to need a spa treatment and a couple more attachments, although I already have a dust brush for it. Really looking forward to its arrival!

Power compared to a full-sized Hoover tank of the period

Hello, would this have the same performance as a full-sized Hoover tank machine of the same vintage, or would it have a smaller motor and was intended for quick, light clean-ups? I have little knowledge of the Hoovers of this period, so I am interested to learn more.

Joel,

The Aerodyne model 51 WAS the full-size Hoover tank of its time, along with the earlier model 50. The models 41 and 42 were a bit smaller, but if I remember right had the same motor and were just as powerful.

Oh, I know that one! It's actually been relisted about 4 or 5 times. It's been up since around November or December as far as when I first seen it. I was surprised to see it relisted so often, I have no idea why nobody wanted it. I was sure it was a rare one as you hardly see anyone finding Hoover canisters.

Glad to see it's in a good home!

I have one, I managed to score the tool kit for it too. I will say that these are not that powerful, I would compare it to a model 30 Electrolux. The model 53 though is a different story as it has a larger motor. Regardless, excellent score!

Great find Jeff:
Hoover used a felt pre-motor filter than can only be accessed by removing the cloth bag and trim (four screws). You can then access the filter to clean it. There's a brass brad that holds the filter to the motor's fan case. Be careful not to dislodge it when removing the filter.

I never understood why Hoover would make the filter so difficult to get to, so much so that the average person didn't know it had one. Every time the bag 'snaps' back after pressing the lever on the bottom, some fine dust is released into the bag housing. That dust, along with whatever dust leaked through the cloth bag, is lodged on the pre-motor filter.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the heads-up on the filter. I never knew they had one there, let alone how to get to it. I'll have to check it out and see what condition it's in. It arrived today and looks pretty much as it does in the pic. I did a bit of "preliminary cleanup as I unpacked it but as I said earlier, it will need a good spa treatment! I fired it up and it has fairly good suction but sounds a little off. Not sure if it's from not having been run for a while, bearing noise, or some other problem. Hopefully I should be able to figure it out as I get further into it.

August 1947 NYT Article "Vacuum Cleaner is of Novel Desi

While unidentified in the article, I'm guessing that the model is 50. The magazine advertisement features the upright model 28 and the tank model 50.

Hoover Aerodyne Tank

That's right Paul. The 50 was the one referred to in the article and ad that you posted, and also their first tank, made from 1947-49. The model 51 which followed it was made from 1950-52 and is the one I have.
