I spruced up my Hoover 707 that I got in St. Louis last year hoping to use in in my mother's house since she has shag carpet wall to wall. My Rainbow SE has been working excellent with the PN-2, but I wanted to get a little retro. What's more retro than chartreuse? So yesterday, I go to use the 707, and much to my dismay, the brushroll is hardly turning at all. So I inspect the old belt, and it was all cracked and stuff. Today, I got a belt in much better condition, no cracks, not streched, and working perfectly on another machine. I put this belt on the 707, and it does the exact same thing, but only when it gets warm. Any ideas? Mind you, I have not tried a *brand new* belt yet. I can't afford to go all the way across town and waste $15 in gas.

There is indeed a better investment for your fifteen bucks!

Does the motor seem heavily strained or does it run at a normal speed?

If the motor is straining, then the brushroll is probably a bit sticky and should be taken apart, at which time the end caps, bearing retainers and shaft should be thoroughly cleaned and the bearings should be replaced.

If the motor runs fine but the brushroll simply won't spin at full speed, then the second belt that you have tried is likely no good either. Perhaps it is an incorrect belt or an aftermarket one. These older Convertibles do not work too well with aftermarket belts, so it is important to use genuine Hoover belts.

By the way, a very wise move on your part to save $15 in gas. You can use that money to take advantage of a great deal on eBay. By far the best I have seen on genuine Hoover belts! Check it out:
