i can see no way of removing the brush strips on this machine i presume you had to change the complete brush roll is that correct im sure one of you will be able to tell me i supose a new brushroll would be impossible to find these days regards Anthony

The brush strips are of course replaceable. Hoover would have never made a brush roller that you couldn't get brush strips for, in 1926. The brush strips can be found on eBay (some one just sold a pair for about $20 on eBay last week).

if thats the case how do you get them out i can see no way of removing them when removing the end caps the bearing housing is riveted int place and the bristles apear to be inserted into the metal of the roller some i have posted son photos of the roller so you can see what i mean

Thankfully, Hoover would never rivet in brushstrips, Vintage Hoovers are built to last, even done to the brushroll!
As far as replacing the strips...
(This is how you do it on a "Convertible (1959-1993) Machine)
Take the brush roll out of the bottom of the cleaner, then with one hand, hold the brushroll, and with the other, attempt to turn the end of the brush-roll (The "Cap" at the end, if you will). This may have frozen in place over there decades of service this machine has, and will once again provide. If it has, attempt to use a lubricant, such as WD-40 or Spray-away. One side sould then be able to screw off, and the other cap can be knocked out of place on the other side is off (The side with the noticeable circle in the middle should be the one that will one screw, allowing acess to pop out the other side by pushing the central rod of the brush roll. once these two caps have been removed, access to the brush strips. You should be able to pull the strips out by now, if they are also frozen in place, again apply lubricant. if you still cannot remove them by pulling, perhaps attempt pushing them with a Flathead screwdriver from the outside of the brusroll, this should free the brushstrips. In order to install the replacement burshstrips, simply repeat the above process in reverse

I had the same quandry with my model 700. The brush strips are spring loaded, they are held in by tabs on either end of the strip while the springs provide the tension to keep them in place. A lot of times they get stuck. But, if you apply pressure to the strip with say a flathead screwdriver you should feel them give a little. Work with them and they should pop out.

thanks for the advice guys well Alex i am familiar with the brushstrips you talk about but this machine is much older than a convertible however i have managed to remove one strip this is how first i removed the end caps they just screw off the usual way underneath the two bearing housings were riveted in place [maybe this was an old repair] i removed the rivets and managed to prise one end of then i pushed the strip out as bvac6 suggested sure enough there is a spring underneath . i have taken more pictures of the process thanks again guys for your advice

finally
one brush strip just the other end to do . I bet these are impossible to get now i will fit new bristles and then put them back although they still have a bit of length they are very soft and just skim over carpet
