I have searched and searched and just can’t find a brushroll for my Hoover 450. Sadly it didn’t come with one when I bought it.

Does anyone have one, know where to find one, know what models might be interchangeable or how to Frankenstein one or have pictures of one? I have a mint brushroll for a 700 that fits and spins freely without the rug plate but is too big with the plate in place.

If anyone has a spare compatible brushroll would they be willing to trade for my 700 brushroll?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I’ve been dreaming of having a Hoover coffee can style machine for 20 years and this is the final piece to finish my restoration IMG_9257.jpeg

That's a beautiful 450 you have there! I have one too, all original except the bag, but I must say that yours looks better than mine. Here's a pic.

Hi:
Any chance this Hoover agitator/brushroll would fit? It measures 11 3/8 inches in overall length. Jusy a little under 11 1/2 inches. I was not able to get a clear photo against the ruler, but the actual length is 11 3/8 inches.

I used a caliper to measure the end cap diameter. it measures 2 .092 inches which is a little shy of 2 1/8 inches.

I also measured the cylinder diameter that hold the two brush strips with my calipers. It is 1.9 inches or just about 1/8 shy of 2 inches.

Man I wish. I have that exact brushroll but its diameter is just a bit too wide to fit. It slots in and rolls fine but the belt slot is a bit too far to the left and the rug plate won’t close with it. IMG_9737.jpegIMG_9738.jpeg
I appreciate the help though.

Oh, Phooey. I was hoping it would fit. It seems an eBay "junker" is your best possibility. How about Craig's List and Facbook Marketplace? Does anyone know if models other than your 450 might use the same or compatible agitator/brushroll?

And antique malls and resale stores are another possobility, but that route takes some time to visit the many shops.

Good Luck,

I understand models 300, 150, 25, 26, 913 have examples of a compatible brushroll.

Cars-guy, can I make a suggestion? If you have a new brushroll ( or at least one that appears in like-new condition ), maybe it might be a better idea to find a compatible bottom plate that will work with that brushroll. Both the bottom plate & brushroll would be hard to find, but you would get A LOT more mileage out of that new brushroll than you would with a used one.

Very cheap compared to today.
You are ignoring the effects of inflation. The Bureau of Labor Statistics website has something called a CPI Inflation Calculator. I just entered $7.10 in 1947 Dollars in it to see the equivalent value in September 2025 Dollars.. That brush roll cost the modern equivalent of $107.26, more than Miele grinds you for their overpriced SEB 236 brush roll ( $95 last I checked ). People forget how expensive relative to our incomes appliances used to be.

Have fun with this website. Take some old 1960s and 1970s Sears or Montgomery Wards catalog prices and see what they look like in today's Dollars. Made in USA was expensive and if you were alive then you will remember we had smaller homes and a lot less stuff. One TV, maybe two if your parents had a TV in their bedroom, no home theaters, no jet skis or snowmobiles in the garage, one car or maybe two if you had money, no computers, a simple land line telephone, etc. We fixed things and made them last.

I know I have a spare brush roll that would fit your 450. I know about where in my garage I put my vintage stuff, but I would still have to spend at least an hour or two looking since there was so much stuff from the old vacuum museum that is now home. Before I look for it, I wanna make sure that you actually want to buy it.

I know that inflation is expensive I was just saying that inflation is very high. Almost no one has something other than that. Bar the computers and landline phones. And also no one fixes things anymore.
Eh, there is a Right to Repair movement in the US and several states such as my own have passed laws requiring manufacturers to sell parts to repair their products. I think people are starting to get tired of throwing stuff away all the time when simple things break. The local ( 85 miles away but as local as it gets for us ) vac shop is always buried in repairs.

I somehow see 2-3 kirbys in my local vacuum dealer even though they were never big sellers. A large amount are sentria-avalir 2 machines.
Kirbys need regular maintenance. The cam bracket wears and / or needs to be greased. Neutral-Drive selector shafts come loose requiring the whole selector assembly to be replaced. The slide blocks get dirty and need to be cleaned and regreased to make the Tech Drive change directions smoothly. Eventually the fan case needs to be resealed.

They do require maintanence, I definitely agree. I must say though that in NZ you can get a refurbished Kirby straight from the importer. They refurbish them in New Zealand. I wonder if my collection of 7 kirby's is enough to trade for an avalir platinum. No way I would do that though. Anyway, they charge about $400 for a g3 and add about $100 per generation newer. I haven't checked, though I suspect the prices go up quicker starting around the sentria. They charge around $175-$225 for their premier service which is a full refurb including a new cam bracket, brushroll, fan, carbons, etc. If you get a g3-g6 machine for around $300-$700. Quite a variable there. Anyway, that is only for the upright vacuum. The standard tools are about $250, the zip brush is $50, the turbo accessory kit is $75 and the shampooer is about $175. If you get the zip brush, tools and machine it is around $800. All of these prices include refurbs too. A good deal consider the prices of Dyson machines over here. It is $1,050 for a pencil vac, or $1,750 for a v16. Just a couple examples. You could get 2 refurbed kirby's or a v16. That is an alright cost even if they need a service every 3 years and a refurb every 10. It is a good option for those who have large homes, pets, long hair, etc. As well as that they have to be able to carry the thing around.
