Hello! I'm new to the whole vacuum repair thing, so forgive me. My grandmother recently gave me her Hoover model 1030 convertible. It worked fine... until it would make loud noises and rattle like no tomorrow when it was turned on. Without the brush roll, it seems ok. Motor is a little rough but it seems to run. This vacuum has showed its age. The bottom plate is rusting. The handle attached to the base has to be taped on, and the cord has electrical tape. I would like to know.. what can I do to fix it? Where can I find a roller for this, and maybe some spare parts. I want to do a complete restoration on this so any suggestions or solutions could help! Thank you!

It's probably the brushroll bearings. I'll attach a link to an aftermarket replacement. Also, your bottom plate seems fine. As for the handle, take the tape off and see if the screw and it's nut are in place. If it's missing, a bolt from the hardware store should work. Cords are cheap and easy to replace. I wish you the best of luck in getting your Convertible in tip-top shape!

P.S. This should be in the Vintage forum. Will the webmaster please move it to the appropriate forum?

Hhmm

Underneath that plate is the fan. Behind the fan is bearing plate.
If you can get belt off, brush roll is okay, take the fan off. I have a 913 that looks identical and I'm not positive if you have to stop the motor from spinning when removing the fan.
My theory is the brush roll puts tension on an old motor. That would cause some noise.
I'll suggest something I don't want comments on what it used for. Leave the fan on get WD 40 spray under the fan. This could loosen up bright things. If the old motor needs a little to loosen stiffness in bearings.
I have an all original 509 Kirby and I sprayed behind the fan. It turned on and ran like it was brand new. Imagine metal fan on metal impellor between metal bearing plate on metal armature. It's metal on metal on metal at least 50-60 years old. WD 40 should loosen it up.
