I've got a Hoover Concept One U4001-006 from around 1978 or 1979 that I picked up last Saturday off Gumtree.

Cleaning and servicing- Pt 1

Cool, I had a green and white one just like that one. I found it at the goodwill for $8 in 2011. I was 10 at the time and I was excited. I loved using it and it worked great. Until one day in the summer of 2014 I was using it and it got louder and louder. It rose an octave every minute it was on. Then it started smoking and it smelled really bad and filled the whole room with smoke. It had died on me. It's been almost two years since then and I would like to get one again sometime. I like yours better than what I had, I like the red on it.

I wonder how it ended up in Australia? Maybe it belonged to John D. Rock's wife, when they moved to Melbourne from Lansing Michigan?
He was manager of Oldsmobile in the 80's before being transferred to Holden.

The U3101 was blue in the US - picture below which I just grabbed from the net. Hoover did export and sell this cleaner elsewhere in the world.. I'm not entirely sure how wide the distribution channel was, but I'm pretty sure that this cleaner went to the UK, and most likely Australia, in this different color scheme.

Congratulations on what I assume to be a pretty rare find. Hopefully everything is in working order. Concepts can be somewhat frustrating to work on if you've never done so before - there's a downloadable service manual (for a small price) at the top of this page, or on automatice.org, if you need step by step instructions on how to take it apart.

judging by the model tag I would say it was made and sent there to be sold. The ones that stayed here have amp rating not watts.

Hoover in Australia

I once had customer who worked for a time in Australia.When he returned his household items were shipped back including a Convertible style with big hood he purchased there.He brought it in wondering if voltage could be changed and traded for a US Hoover.I think I still have it.If so it will be offered as I come to it.I recall it had flat handle,scent chamber & more.Light tan or cream color.
