Thanks for sharing!

That was interesting. My guess is that it was a combination of low initial sales, coupled with a high rate of returns. I can remember when that machine was in stores, and no one at the time taking it very seriously.

It seems they were in stores for a very short time. I don't even remember them honestly, until I joined on here and saw a few turn up at Habitat.

Those bagged Eureka Smart Vacs were very aggressive, and good carpet cleaners, and they were pretty quiet too. At the time, I didn't think much of them (repaired a lot of them, the belt tensioner had problems), but looking back I can see why CR recommended them.

I really liked the Eureka Boss Smart Vac. It deep cleaned carpets really well, and offered three separate “World Vac” style attachments on board. Bag change system was really easy to use too. And all for under $200.

Well, most know that Whirlpool usaed Hoover as a cash cow

selling acres of real estate, etc.
The "Z" was designed to be a "man's vacuum". It was not well-marketed, either.
I have a new one. opened it at one of my mini meets.
Not the first thing I'd rescue in a fire, but quite a collectable.
The lights are very bright so as they say in England and Ireland, "you may hoover in the dark". They'd use hoover as a verb, yes. 'I will hoover my house". I like to hoover with my new Kirby. But, I will hoover the house with my new Hoover, which was made by Hoover. Yes, Hoover can be a noun, adjective, or a verb.
Do we all but Scotch tape? or cellophane tape, not made by Scotch. How many have tissues? Do you have them made by Kleenex?

So, I always hoover my house with a nice Hoover. I can even "hoover in the dark" with my Hoover cleaner.
Maybe I'll break out the "Z" at he VCCC convention , hosted in Scranton. You KNOW I will.

Nice! 👍

I have the Z700 and Z400 both now, and I do not use them much until I can find a couple more belts as backup and give them a restoration, and even then I will gently use them so as not to risk part wear on unobtainable pieces.

My Z400 is the most competent at the moment and I used it for a bit to try and vacuum my house with. It is comically impossible to use in a house as small as mine, and it sounds like you are on the tarmac at LaGuardia airport as soon as you turn it on.

They were cool vacuums and ahead of their time, a lot of their features are implemented on vacuums now offered by Dyson. But it was just too much too soon and they were enormously expensive to buy on a whim, and people just laughed them off.

Wow

The vacuum looks like a deformed over engineered vacuum on steroids.
The reviews I read hoovering in the dark might be possible. You'd use the z as a spolight for a vacuum that could vacuum.
