Today I picked up an Electrolux 1521 in a thrift store with the intention of re-selling it. Took it home and took the motor out because it wasn't sounding quite right. I thought it may have been clogged fans or something simple. I discovered that there was a hole in the fan housing that an individual or vac shop had repaired with duct tape. The fan had to have been replaced because the unit has full suction. I just can't believe that a vac shop would take such a hugh short cut. Also the motor is GS electric. Did some Electrolux canisters use GS electric motors?

Since I'm from Oklahoma I would bet some redneck was vacuuming out his huge Ford F150 and sucked up a couple of shell casings. I've worked on about a dozen Electrolux canisters and have never encountered a damaged fan housing. Maybe a pre motor filter for Electrolux canisters is not a bad idea.

That is odd. It appears that the hole is flared from the inside. So whatever caused the whole definitely came from the fan. Was the bottom of the bag chamber open?

Man, unless you want to spend some money on it I think you just bought a parts vacuum.

Suckolux has a good point about using aluminum HVAC tape instead of cloth duct tape. But then again whomever did this managed to poke holes through a vacuums fan housing from the inside. We're not talking intellectual giants here.

The motor says GS Electric on top of the fan housing. It could be a replacement. Not sure. It works fine as is. It's not like I don't have fifteen other Electrolux canisters to choose from. I'll keep it and use it for odd jobs. It did come with a lighted PN which is nice.

It was cheap $14.95 the thrift stores around here aren't consistent on their prices. The bag chamber appeared to be fine. They where probably using cheap bags.

I like that the brush has a hard wire power cord running outside of the swivel neck. Reliability over prettiness works for me. I also like the real steel wand.

So what did you do? Put some aluminum tape over the holes and put it back into the vacuum or did you change the fan housing?

You know the staff in most thrift stores never shop high end merchandise and honestly have no idea what some of the donated goods sold for new. A local thrift store had a nice Kirby G series for sale with all the accessories and the display box for $10. I didn't buy it, Kirbys are just not my thing, but talking to the clerk a couple of days later after it was sold she told me she messed up should have priced it at $40. I asked why $40? She told me because it was a $200 vacuum new. When I told her they sell for closer to $1500 you could see her struggling to get her mind around the whole concept of a vacuum that probably cost the equivalent of two months rent in our town.

I saw the same thing after buying that $25 Electrolux Epic 8000. The clerks at the Salvation Army had no idea what the thing was or what they sold for (it was in an outdoor yard, not even in the store itself along side some really beat uprights), and honestly it is the first and so far only Electrolux vacuum I have seen in person. Even for me Electrolux was kind of a vague concept. I knew the name and that they existed but that roach at the thrift shop was the first real Electrolux vacuum I had encountered in my life. No friends or family members have high end vacuums. They are so expensive and thus so rare that lower income working people are never aware of these high end items. If it isn't in K-Mart, Wally World or Target it doesn't exist.

As a result us collectors can get some real bargains, though at my income level I often feel a little guilty bargain hunting in a thrift store where the goods are donated by others so the poor can afford to buy what they need.

Hey I like Kmart and Target!!

Maybe I should have said if it isn't depicted in some late night infomercial screaming at them from the TV or featured in some "reality" TV show then it doesn't exist. Feel better now?

I wanted to see how my 1521 compared to my other 1521 UltraLux. The UltraLux has a 9.0 amp motor without the power nozzle and the 1521 originally had an 8.0 amp motor without the power nozzle. I'm not sure how many amps the replacement motor uses. The UltraLux has a slightly powerful motor. I know Electrolux used model number 1525 on many of their canisters. I'm by no means an Electrolux expert.

kloveland,

is there any chance at all that you have a Model G that you'd be willing to part with? I have been searching everywhere for a decent one, and all that I've found are overpriced and/or beat up. The worst was a refurbished G that the seller wanted over $600 for. Ridiculous!

I don't have one that I can part with. Have you tried eBay? I've seen a fair amount on eBay lately. You will find one. It took me a long time to find the two that I have. The brown G was a fairly recent find by my friend. Both of my turquoise Gs needed work when I found them.
