Hinge dilemma

I thought I had this solved but alas I do not. The original plastic lid hinge on the Avocado Bomber broke. I am having a helluva time finding any kind of hinge that will clear the width and girth of the seal that protudes from the side of the vacuum. I have been looking at hinges until I am blue in the face and can find nothing that looks like it might work except possibly some marine hinges.

Someone out her has had to have been in my boat in the past. Take a look at some images of the problem. What kind of hinge do I need and how would I attach it? Thanks.

What about the hinges used on piano benches, look at hobby lobby for small furniture hinges

That was my original idea but I can't find a piano hinge to clear the seal. It protrudes a good 10 mm on the bottom and 7 mm on the top. I have not been able to find any kind of offset hinge to clear that seal.

Has anyone out there faced the same or similar problem? If so I would sure love to know how it was overcome.

1968 - 1969 Camero console lid hinge

This may work if you pull the hinge pin out and turn over one the the hinge plates. Just looking at your pics reminded me of these "standup" hinges on the old Camero's. I would attempt to remove the original and cement clear or white vinyl to both sides and then reattach the hinge. That would retain the shape of the original and add a very flexible hinge in the middle. I tend to look to repair rather than replace in these situations. I'm much too easily frustrated doing the search for a replacement.

I was also thinking of using a flexible material behind the original hinge. What kind of vinyl would I use? I was thinking about this flexible tape called Blenderm used by RC modelers for hinges.

Any flexible vinyl would work as would a sturdy fabric such as duck cloth or canvas, vinyl would be easier to keep clean. Even a heavy gauge vinyl/PVA shower curtain would work. Wal-Mart (in stores with fabric) or JoAnn, Michaels or Hobby Lobby also sell vinyl of various gauges to measure.  A six inch strip (1/6 yard) would provide material to repair a few dozen such hinges. I think Benderm might be a bit too thin to hold up for long term use. I've used it for a hinge repair on a polycarbonate box and it tore after a few months of very infrequent use.

Tell em you need clear vinyl to cover  a desktop so you can read through it and keep documents clean...somethings nobody needs to know in detail.

Ever tried something called a "CA hinge". It is used in RC aircraft.

Why not screw an average cabinet hinge on to where the old one has broken?

Supersweeper, I wish it were that easy. The gasket that sits between the canister and the lid sticks out 7 - 10 mm. Any hinge has to have enough offset to go over that gasket. A simple cabinet hinge or piano hinge won't work. I will post some images so you can see.

Gr8DaneDad have a good idea, use some fabric like leather under the old hinge. It would be discreet. The CA hinge look a good idea too.

Hmmm, hadn't thought of leather. Our new Joann store doesn't open until the end of August. The big signs on the building and the recent opening of the Marshalls in the same building fooled me. I had been leaning towards some sort of heavy duty cordura, perhaps material from a 2 to 2 1/2 inch wide nylon strap.

I was thinking underneath the old hinge fastened through the same holes the rivets and screws went through. Ran out of time to do everything today.
