What a monster! I bet it weighs a ton!! Interestingly, the suction motor appears to be just the standard size of an old household vacuum cleaner. The fan also appears to be fairly small, going by the size of the housing. But then look at that big motor underneath to drive the brush roll! It's huge!! So it would seem that this beast is more or less just a glorified electric carpet sweeper, lots of heft in the brush roll department but then just enough suction power to draw the dirt into the bag.

It was used to Lift the pile of down trodden carpets especially before carpet cleaning. The suction motor was jsu there to remove dust.

We had similar Clarke versions here in SA. They weigh an absolute ton. Hotels loved them as just running this thing over the carpet made the carpet look amazing, That said they had a drawback of bringing Sand to the top of the pile but not to pick i up meaning you would have to vacuum behind it. This mainly happened in entrance ways to buildings were heavy traffic was normal.

Indeed, appears to be a pile lifter type upright vacuum-Pile lifters have long stiff bristle drum like brushrolls to reach deeper into the carpet than normal vacuums-all the way even to the carpet backing-the machine is used before a carpet is cleaned-then again after it has dried.Certified is now the most frequent maker of these machines-they are beautiful and made to do a tough job-want a real Certified for my collection. You can get Kirby type dirtmeters for them to show what they can do.The prices for one start at like 2 grand. They have a Royal upright motor for suction and a 1/3 Hp cap start induction motor for the brushroll.I have seen one of these are they are beasts! You use it almost like a lawn mower-go in one direction-then go in the other way.The machine is too heavy to go back&forth-and the force of the brushroll turning makes back &forth movement difficult.Did try the one I saw at a vac place for repair.A carpet cleaning service here owns it.Certified has a good website describing their machines.Saw one of those a t a Daycon showroom along with the NSS Bronco-two of the most beautiful vacuums I had seen!!

The Hild Pile Lifter vacuum looks so much like the Certified Pile Lifter vacuum sold today. The Certified version uses disposable bags.It also has a "scrap trap" to catch pins, nails, paper clips, pebbles before they get into the suction motor fan.

HILD pile lifter vac

Thank you
I can’t seem to find any information on the web about these vac. I’m in the process of cleaning it up It still runs too. This is a amazing machine does anyone know anything about these????
Thank you

Pile lifter vacuums were used and some still use them today. They were used by carpet cleaning services before the carpet is extraction cleaned.Gets up most of the dry stuff usual vacuums miss.A pile lifter vacuum has a VERY powerful long bristle brushroll that can reach all the way to carpet backing.Usual vacuums do not. Then the pile lifter would be used again by the carpet service after the carpet has dried to "relift" the pile.Would like one of these monsters-but don't have the space. You can still buy "Certified" pile lifter machines-they are VERY heavy-70+ lbs!!You push the machine only-not back and forth like a regular vacuum.Bet using one will give you a workout! And you probably need a 20A outlet to plug it into with both of its large motors!
