If you are replacing the fan entirely, a pair of vice grips around the plastic part of the fan (don't worry about nicking it up) and take a small screwdriver through the hole on the fan shaft. Remove the shaft and the fan will then pull straight off.
If you are planning on keeping the fan that is on the machine, I would recommend using the Kirby fan tool to remove the fan. It is a small metal tool that holds the armature in place so you can unscrew the motor shaft.

This is the tool you'll need. It's the only way I know to keep the armature in a bind in order to tighten the belt pulley onto the fan. The long end simply slides up onto the armature itself and the short end will then place the bind on the motor field housing. I have a Heritage/Legend service manual. I can scan the page that shows how it's done when you're ready. By the way, I would encourage you to put a little grease on the threads of the armature shaft before screwing the belt pulley onto it. That helps the next guy who'll have to remove it!

Congratulations on a job well done! I'm presently fighting with the fan on a Classic III. I think it's now time to invest in a vise grip! LOL! Hmmm. However, I do own a vise. I guess I can pull the rear bearing and put the commutator end in the vise. Tomorrow's project.

how do you do it on a classic?
i have the first classic with its original metal fan and cannot get it off for my life! any suggestions?

It would be dangerous to put the armature in a vise as you can easily disfigure the back of it and end up with more problems than necessary. if you can get the armature exposed in the machine, just hold it with a rag while you try and turn the fan shaft. If all else fails, put the fan shaft in a vise and turn the armature.

LOL! I don't think I communicated my plan very well! What I ended up doing is removing the rear bearing. Then with the armature shaft exposed, I took rag, wrapped it around the armature shaft and clamped a vice grip on the shaft. Then I took another vice grip and clamped it to the fan pulley and the fan spun right off. I just needed some extra leverage that I wasn't getting by holding onto the armature with a rag.

Is that the Classic or Classic Omega? If it is the Classic, I think its armature may have a hole drilled through it that is used for fan removal. Look down through the vent in the motor housing and spin the impeller around. As you spin it, you may see the hole. You can take an ice pick, a thin punch pin, or something similar and put it down into the hole. That will bind the armature so you can spin the impeller off.
