This time a Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80. It also came from the Everett, WA Goodwill Outlet store. It runs and as a basic vacuum is complete but missing all accessories. The light bulb is broken. The bag was full of prehistoric dirt, which is common with thrift store finds. You'd think they would at least empty the bag, but oh no, that's way too difficult. The aluminum has that stained look on it, not shiny any more. I don't know what the duct tape around the handle is about; it doesn't seem to be broken. Guess I'll find out when I take it off.

I have another Dual Sanitronic 80 like this but it has a loose vacuum head that I haven't been quite able to put right yet. I don't know why these homely green Kirbys have found their way to me; I prefer the earlier ones that are trimmed in red. I think after the Sanitronics the Classic series came along, which were more massive and I don't care much for those having owned one once.

Wonder how Kirby came up with the "Dual" part of Sanitronic. They don't seem much different in function from the older 500 series (etc) machines.

My modest selection of vintage vacs consists mostly of Kirby and Hoover brand. I have a 1946 Hamilton Beach cannister and a 1980-something Sanyo cannister which are kinda the odd men out. I almost snagged an Electrolux at the Goodwill but my wife was along that time and whipped me down on it.

The "Dual" stands for the two speeds for the motor. When using it as an upright, the machine is at normal speed. When using attachments the machine switches to high speed. The 500 series Kirbys were single speed only, the first two speed was the "Dual Sanitronic 50".

Nice finds there, especially the Constellation. These days I never seem to find anything good at the thrift stores. Maybe when I get my license that will change...

Thanks for the explanation about the "Dual" mode. Since I don't have attachments for either of my D80's I've never been down that road, but will look into it now.

I might be able to find a matching boxed set for you. It might be a while before I can go and get them.
