Numatic started manufacturing high quality commercial machines in the early 1970's. the face was added because the bosses at Numatic noticed how much of a lonely job commercial cleaning is and and thought that "characterising" the vacuum would make it a slightly more pleasent job.
Numatic are currently the best selling vacuum cleaner in the UK. They branched into the domestic market in the late 1990's due to high demand from people who had seen and used them in their offices, hotels and shops. They're also the best selling commercial brand in Europe.
My Dad has a Numatic NV250 from 1979 that he got when he first joined British Gas. It's never missed a beat, despite being used to clean domestic and commercial boilers
