Help on the age of a Hoover 425

I have a Hoover 425 upright that was bought second hand by my grandfather and handed down through the family. Using it the other day to vacuum my cars interiors I began wondering just how old this baby really is and would appreciate any information anyone might have on it.

Still works fine, bag, cord and so on are original and in good shape for their age and I have the original accessories in the cardboard box they came in.Only thing is the brushes are threadbare if I can use that expression.

Probably worth restoring but that leads to my next question. It looks what it is and that is vintage. It probably would appreciate some nice cleaning and polish but a part of me says that to do more would be the wrong thing. Any guidance on this would be much appreciated.

The Hoover 425 was made from 1931-1933, and was considered the lower-priced alternative to the Deluxe model 750, which was the first Hoover model to have a headlight and a two-speed motor.

Judging from the photograph you've provided, your cleaner looks like it would be well worth restoring. I haven't much experience with metal polishing, but there are other members of the club who have. I wish you the best of luck. You really have a rare treasure, a Hoover 425 with a complete attachment set!

Armed with your valued information Ray, I could not believe my luck when I found the manual for a 1936 Hoover 825 right here on this site!

The 825 is obviously an upgrade but the the instructions for use are identical to the 425!!!

Am I over the moon and glad I took the time to join.

Hi Peter,

I agree with Ray and Doug. You have a nice 425 there and it will look great after it's polished. I usually use Mother's Mag Aluminum Polish, but don't know if it's available in your area. Here's a pic of mine, as it was when I got it. Handle could use a paint touch-up and nozzle needs some polish, otherwise in nice shape.
