HELP NEEDED HOOVER JUNIOR U1036

Good evening, I've not posted on here before so am a bit new to all this. Essentially I've had a really bad run of luck over the past six months with Hoover Junior (and one Ranger) that I've bought from Ebay. They've worked for a day or two and then BANG - they blow up! Each time it's happened the sellers blame the capacitors. I'm no electrician so I know nothinng about these types of things. Normally I just count my losses and throw the item away, as someone said it's dangerous to use these cleaners if the capacitors have gone - but a thread I saw just now says that they are not needed? On the cleaner that blew up just now there was the familiar bang, the cloud of (what looked like) white smoke and the familiar stench of gunpowder. I REALLY donn't want to throw this machine away, I would really like to keep it. Does anybody know where I can get this sorted out? Much appreciated. Regards, Jason

They aren't needed. The only thing with removing them is if you vacuum with the TV or radio on you'll get some interference, but why you'd vacuum with them om I shall never know. Anyway,

They're so simple to remove, best way is to use a choc block. Gain access to the suppressor, cut all four (2x reds and 2x black or what ever color they're) you'll need a crimping tool to remove the plastic covering of the cables. Remove about 1/4 to 1/2 inches of the covers. Now, twist the cables, leaving them individual, get your choc block, insert (we'll stick with red and black for the sake of it) red to red and black to black.

Make sure you stick down the chock block when does as it will rattle about and become annoying (just like me ;P)

Put everything back together and you're all set! Beware, carbon brush wear will be slightly quicker!

Thank you very much for that. When this one blew up the motor stopped. When the Ranger blew up the motor carried on. If I remove this thing from the cleaner will it automatically reset the motor or is there something else I need to do first?

As far as I know yes. Just as longs there's no armature or carbon brush damage. And no problem ☺

The sellers were right, supressor failure is very common, don't forget the components will be knocking on the door of 40/50 years old!

They are fine to be removed. Unless you use an old valve radio or TV, then you might get interferance with the machine running. Any kind of modern LCD TV will be fine.

To remove it, you basically want to join the wires back together. So you will have a live going in, and a live coming out, snip the supressor out and join the wires. Some work on the neutral, some on all. If the wires are colour coded, that makes it easier, if not then post a picture of the wires and someone here will know.

Thank you all. I did what you suggested, but to negate the need for those two plastic connectors I just used the terminals that were already there. I plugged it in and discovered that the fuse had blown, so I replaced that and switched it on. The cleaner started up but with a very loud screech so I switched it off within one second. I think this may be damaged now beyond repair....?

Could be bearing damage, or worse armature.

I've got no idea how to check these things, so I guess this is another cleaner destined for the bin. I'm so fed up with it all now, this is the fourth that has gone the same way. I'm not going to bother buying another one.

Sorry for late reply, couldn't be bothered to go on here much. Anyway, these sort of things happen and to be honest, is expecting with old machines. Now, seeing how you've gained access to the motor before hand, I might as well go into details on how to remove the motor for armature inspection.

Now, im presuming you're talking for a junior, so ill answer that one, if it isn't let me know and ill explain tother.


There's 4 screws holding the motor in place, all at each corner. The two on top are easy, then there's the two on the bottom which you'll need a long philips screw driver to reach. Sometimes not all the screws are there due to being shook loose over time or not being bothered to be return to their place by services.

Once you've removed them, you can remove the motor. Now, beware if its had a previous services, and if it was done correctly there'll be sealant (and yes, I highly recommend you do this too, later on of course.)

Once the motors removed its just literally a matter of removing all the screws,
keep in mind that there's be 2longer ones and all 4? Will have little nuts on the back, just note their placemats.

Once removed you'll be able to remove the armature with the fan still in place. If you're not conducting any further attention on her, the you might as well leave thar fan in place. Now, if you wouldn't mind, if you could send me a picture of the armature and ill see if there's anything wrong with it.

Also, one last thing that's crossed my mind. When you removed the suppressor, did you replace the little metal cage and or like this little metal "rod"?
