Hello, my 20ish yr old Oreck 8 has apparently expired - in the market for something new. Have a 4000 sq ft home - all 85 yr old pine flooring with several Persian or other Eastern rugs - no carpeting otherwise. Have a german shepherd dog that lives inside, so pet hair is an issue. Also house is upstairs/downstairs, so stairs have to be vacuumed and vacuum also has to be lugged upstairs. We have pretty much settled on bagged over bagless. Being as gentle as possible to the wood flooring and rugs is important, but obviously need house to be clean. I'm considering Miele S7xxx cat & dog, Sebo X4 Pet, Sebo Felix and possibly Windsor Sensor (XP - maybe). Would be most appreciative to hear some enthusiast opinions that might help me choose between these and perhaps make suggestions if there are other brands I should consider - I have no prob shelling out in the $700 range, but that's prob as high as I really want to go. With that much pine flooring I would forget the above mentioned machines and select a good power nozzle canister instead. If you do ultimately go that route, the Windsor Sensor XP with the electric servo motor for the height is very forgiving on hard surface flooring and easy on the area rugs as well. You will appreciate the lack of acres of shiny plastic of its Sebo cousin. Another option is the guy on EBAY with 8 brand new NSS Pacer 12UE machines new in the box for $250.00 and will out clean all of your original choices. That would be my choice if I was buying a new upright. A difficult machine to overlook at that price.
A canister like the Sebo D4 is excellent for your application in terms of power, hose length, large bag and 40 feet of cord. It will exceed your budget by a couple bags of Wilderness dog food and is money well spent for what your are doing with it. Next choice would be the Purple Riccar Impeccable which adds a couple hundred more to this adventure. Any Miele S8 with SEB217 is also good but suffers from short hoses, cords, and the need for a vivid imagination when it comes to the supplied above the floor tools coupled with high maint. costs.

I'd go with the S7, but I'd probably go with a S7 HomeCare or S7 Swing.
Out of all of the brands we carry, there isn't an upright that will clean bare floors like the S7. You flip the switch to turn the brush off and away you go.
The reason I say one of the automatic models is because the suction will adjust when you go on your rugs.
The other nice thing about the s7 is the brush pivots so it won't be too aggressive on your expensive rugs.
I've sold tons of S7's and I've sold tons of other uprights... The s7 is truly a well built machine and provide you with many years of service. The only true con of the S7 would be its handle weight. It's not exactly light. You'd have to go down to a Miele Gallery or Dealer and play with one.
One thing to keep in mind, and this is coming from a guy that sells Riccar... Miele makes everything except the wiring... They make their circuit cards, their filters and their bags. The brush roll may not have replaceable strips but it isn't going to shred your rugs.
Other models are out there, and they are good machines. Riccar's Brilliance is an awesome machine but it is too aggressive when doing scatter rugs. Its an awesome machine with attached carpeting though.
The maneuverability of the S7 is awesome and with the squeegee on the nozzle it is awesome for bare floors. The front portion of the head gets under furniture. All around it is a nice upright.
If you were to go the canister route, I'd stay towards the S6 or S8 line. The S8 is an awesome canister but you would have three pieces you are lugging around to do your cleaning.
Keep in mind any place that is worth their salt will let you borrow one of their machines for the night to decide... Especially in that price range.

A canister would be best suited for your needs. I would highly recommend Riccar or Simplicity for their canisters. Just like other members have posted, the Prima and Wonder are probably some of the best on the market. The higher price paid is well worth the extra value that you get with the machine. If you do go the Miele route, any of the S8 series with a power nozzle is a pretty good contender. Also with any Miele, I would highly recommend getting the Parquet Twister bare floor brush, this brush makes cleaning hard floors a snap.

For something a bit different...
I'd suggest getting a Miele QuickStep and equipping it with a Twister XL bare floor head and the SEB236 powerhead. It's light, easy to handle, and with an optional hose it can easily be used for above floor/upholstery cleaning.

Thank you all for the help. Though I appreciate the versatility of a canister vac, it just wouldn't be a good fit for us. I pored over as much material as I could find, and went with the Felix 1. I figure if we try it and don't care for it, then I can send it back apparently with no loss on my end. I am probably most concerned with reports of this unit running pretty hot, length of hose and ease of its use for using attachments and I would rather an automatic than manual height adjustment. I thought seriously about X4, but don't like the idea of not being able to turn off the roller brush. Looks like there is a new version of the X series out in Europe already that would do what I wanted, but not sure when that will come to the US. I will let you guys know how it goes.

Nice choice with the Felix. A great choice for an upright for use on bare floors. If you're worried about the hose length or tool use, there is an additional extension hose that will reach up a full staircase that can be bought from Sebo along with a host of other tools if you need them.

The Felix is also far more nimble than the Miele S7. It only runs hot when owners who are so used to having conventional vacuums with a high noise associate that high power = better pick up. Not so with the German vacuums. In all the 7 years I've had my Felix, it seldom gets used on the maximum setting unless I am picking up lots of chunky dust off hard floors with the brush roll turned off.
As you say, if the Felix isn't a winner and you can send it back, then go with that offer. At least you'll know that you've tried it. The Felix has a general total weight of 6.7kg and goes to 5kg when the ET1 power nozzle head is removed. SEBO usually add their Deluxe Parquet floor tool as standard and that makes a for a quick run around on hard floors quite easy and light to do.
The Miele S7 weighs 9.5kg.

I like my Felix & I am unanimous in that! 
furthermore it has enough power on the low setting to gobble up everything & even when switched to high it didn't get that hot so I'm just wondering if people are getting this confused with a hob?? 
or a room heater??

You'll love the Simplicity Freedom/Riccar Supralite even better! The price isn't very high. If you don't mind an extra canister, they are great machines! Made in the USA, powerful, lightweight, reliable and well made! Also, the bags are huge!
