Hello, my 20ish yr old Oreck 8 has apparently expired - in the market for something new. Have a 4000 sq ft home - all 85 yr old pine flooring with several Persian or other Eastern rugs - no carpeting otherwise. Have a german shepherd dog that lives inside, so pet hair is an issue. Also house is upstairs/downstairs, so stairs have to be vacuumed and vacuum also has to be lugged upstairs. We have pretty much settled on bagged over bagless. Being as gentle as possible to the wood flooring and rugs is important, but obviously need house to be clean. I'm considering Miele S7xxx cat & dog, Sebo X4 Pet, and possibly Windsor Sensor (XP - maybe). Would be most appreciative to hear some enthusiast opinions that might help me choose between these and perhaps make suggestions if there are other brands I should consider - I have no prob shelling out in the $700 range, but that's prob as high as I really want to go. Thanks in advance for any help.

Vacuum Cleaner Recommendation

Hi Jdhaynes! I vote for a filter queen. I have both a new one and a model 31. The older one has a felt pad that that snaps on to the floor tool and works great on wooden floors. Most are two speeds and are very powerful as far as suction and airflow. Both newer and older models do not use any bags (uses a cone filter, not bag) and empties out as a new bagless model machine would. I clean several homes and they all have both pets and mainly wood floors and its my vac of choice. Try one out and see what you think. Before spending a ton of money, buy a cheap one locally or on craigslist and see what you think. Bet you will love it!
I am sure you will have a lot of recommendations in response to your post, and all will be winners as the members are incredible experts. Good luck!

Also, forgot to mention that i have a 10 foot hose that makes the stairs a breeze. It was the best investment I ever made. I also see that you were asking about an upright. I cant say I would recommend one for hardwoods and you probably want straight suction for the persian rugs if they are really nice (i am sure they are) and are probably delicate. IMHO I wouldnt recommend an upright for wooden floors for a few reasons. Eventually the wood will beat the bristiles off the roll or shorten its life quickly, and as a pro cleaner, I feel as if the floor brush allows me to "scrub" out all the cracks and crevices in a lot of floors as well as use the dusting brush and crevice tool to edge the room and clean baseboards. Good luck!

Sounds like a job for a canister vacuum, not an upright. I'd go for a Miele S8 or a Sebo D4 canister - both have lots of options for attachments, carpet nozzles and great filtration. The standard Miele Mini Turbo Nozzle is excellent for stairs. And some of the S8 models have a spotlight on the hose handle! The Sebo D4 is definitely bulkier but gives you a longer cord and a longer hose.

For quick sweeping of all your bare floors, add a lightweight rechargeable Swiffer SweeperVac to your arsenal of cleaning equipment: it provides the easiest way to sweep and dust bare floors!

I'm surprised you kept the Oreck so long. Oreck brush rolls spin at above-average RPMs which is not a great idea for delicate rugs. Plus with so much wood flooring, most anything you'll find in the $700 range will be an improvement. Choosing from your list, I would go with the Miele since it's the only one that can shut off the brush roll to clean hard floors.  However, Miele replacement parts are expensive and it may not be the best choice if you want another vacuum to last 20 years. Personally I think your home sounds perfect for a Lindhaus Healthcare. They're maneuverable, deep cleaning yet gentle, and easily clean hard floors. They're right within your price range too. See if you can find a local dealer to test one out, but they are available online as well.

Good luck with whatever choice you make. Your house sounds beautiful!
