I found a craigslist ad for a Riccar 1500 P. The advertiser did say it needed to be taken to a vacuum shop for a good cleaning and "tuneup." He advised a specific local vacuum repair shop (which I know to be very reputable.)
The machine looked okay to me in the ad's picture. The seller said it has all attachments and a manual. He is getting rid of it because they recently installed a central vacuum.
I think I know enough to not conclude the sale if I turn the thing on and it doesn't work at all, or makes really strange sounds, but I'm definitely going to have it cleaned professionally before I bring it into my own home. There is no sense in taking any risks with the bedbug epidemic in the Northeast.
Please pardon a newbie question, but what is considered to be a "vacuum tuneup?'
I fell in love with my Supralite RS 4, and even though the ancient Electrolux XXX can do a reasonably good job for above the floor cleaning, it's an effort to get it to pick up dog hair from upholstery, blankets, and drapes. I had back surgery in December, and deal with the Lux essentially by kicking it around. I'd really prefer to have something I can empty without crouching on the floor and shaking out a dust bag into newspapers.
I'll still keep the XXX as it belonged to my grandmother (who died about nine years before I was born,) It was handed down to my mother and I have many happy childhood memories of that machine. So the XXX has a lot of sentimental, and some practical value, but realistically speaking, to avoid another disc problem, I really need to get a more modern machine.
