Help and information needed badly :-)

I have a couple of questions for the Hoover experts in the club. I just today added a very nice Hoover 25 to my collection. After emptying a full bag of old dirt and vacuuming out the bag good I began the cleaning of the unit itself. After I had it cleaned up so no dust would fly I plugged it in and turned it on and it ran fine. Then, all of a sudden it lost half of its RPM. During the cleaning I discovered that I had no idea at all how to get the hood off to clean the motor area and check the brushes. The fan spins freely as does the agitator. So, can anyone help me on this loss of RPM problem and give me information on how to remove the hood? I will appreciate any and all knowledge anyone is willing to share with me. I am hoping my RPM problem is motor brushes. I took the handle off and plugged it into a good extension cord and it still has no RPM. Oh yes, once in a great while after having set for a long time I try it again and it speeds up but then dies again. Thanks again for any and all help Jim

BRUSHES!

I would comfortably venture to say it IS the carbon motor brushes. I definitely would not run it again (at all!) until these are changed lest you risk serious damage to the commutator!! I am guessing this is the one most recently sold on Ebay? If so, very nice machine!

to remove 25 motor hood

pry up on the hoover name plate on the hood, just under the light hole. then ther will be a screw to remove and then the hood will come off.

I will NOT run this vac again until I have checked the motor brushes. Now that I know how to get the bloody hood off I can get to them to replace them. I just hope I have done damage to the motor now. Thanks again to both of you for this much needed and appreciated information !!! Jim

I meant Have Not done damage to the commutator now. I have the hood off and it is cleaned and the dust is all gone from the motor. Since it is 2 AM here I will tackle the brushes tomorrow. I really do appreciate this information and your knowledge you have shared with me !!! Yes I just got this today from ebay for a a very reasonable price. It is the one that had the white spots all over it. It cleaned up nicely and has a genuine Hoover Special bag on it rather than the original when new but it is in great shape. The cord is original but has some bad spots on the outer cover. I want to keep the original cord if it is safe to operate on a very limited basis. Thanks again guys !! Jim

The sad saga continues :-(

I took the Hoover 25 to the shop today and check the carbon brushes. They were nearly new if not new. So, I cleaned them a bit and replaced them after I ran a cleaning stick against the commutator turning it by hand. Plugged the vac in and turned it on and sparks flew from every direction. That of course means that I have a bad armature. My dilemma continues now as I ask once again for knowledge and help from you Hoover Experts. Does anyone know if only an armature from a 25 will fit a 25? I have no armatures from any Hoovers available to me. I am hoping someone out there has a good one they are willing to sell me or trade for NOS Royal armatures, NOS Royal front and rear bearings or lots of NOS Hoover brush strips set in lead. Any advise, knowledge or help will certainly be appreciated. Thanks again to Rick and Chris for their initial help in removing the hood and carbon brush information. So, in closing, if anyone out there can help me in this dilemma I will certainly be a happy camper. My 25 is now on display and is in great nearly pristine condition other than the bad armature. Not necessarily a bad armature.

Jim, I have to ask with no insult intended, did you clean out the slots between the contacts on the commutator? If any of them were packed so as to cause a short and they were not cleaned out its possible the cleaning stick caused more imapacting of the offending conducting debris.

Just a thought before condemning the armature. The windings can be individually checked for continuity or shorts.

I have decided to take it to an electric motor rewind shop I know who gives free checks. I took a motor there from a Health-Mor and they condemned it. They will be honest with me and know what they see. Thanks again for this advise. I just have to save this vacuum because it is in pristine condition. See you in Detroit at the Auto Show !!!!!! That Dave, he's here, he's there, he's everywhere. If I can muster up the courage I may just be at the show next week as well. I don't do crowds well at all and you know what those things are like. The last one I was at was in 1970 with dad and at that time the featured Rolls Royce was a whopping $20,000. iirc and everyone was oohing and ahhing.

North American International Auro Show at Cobo Hall, Detroit

I know what you mean about the crowds Pete. Jeez, some families will even bring children under 6 !!! and picture opportunities are patiently fought for. I, of course, armed with video & still cameras, snatch up bagfuls of brochures. LOL

But the Industry Preview Show tickets have become much too expensive at $75 each. This was always my favorite option. No annoying family crowds, just car guys and lots of space and all car doors open.

It is what it is. Don't know what day we're meeting. Waiting on Jim to name the day and the Davy Roadtrip Machine will swing into action.

Darren will know his surgery schedule next week and we will set our time then. I know this is short notice for you but we have no choice until we find out when he is scheduled for sugery and is on call. I am really looking forward to the trip. It is only 3 hours for us. auto show...

We, my brother and several cousins, have been going to the auto show every year since the early 70's, and the crowds vary. We usually go on a Sat. when they are the worst, and we average 6-9 hours there. But we have gone on a Friday and the crowds were much lighter. Avoid MLK day as the kids are out of school and the crowds are heavy. We make a day of it, go to Greek Town to our favorite restaurant, and hit a casino or two. We used to get home about 3 AM, now it's usually before midnight, but we are getting older.

My brother had considered not going this year since he is having a lot of back issues, but he is opting to go since there is a chance it might be the last one...

The motor is removed and

on its way to Chris in NY to be rebuilt. He is going to make it look and work like a new one like he did that lady's beautiful model 28 he showed us. I can't wait to get it back home and put all back together and hear the purr it will make on the carpet. I had what I thought was an impossible situation until he replied here that he could and would help me. This club and forum are not describable. The VCCC is a wonderful place to live Jim
