Handheld Testing - And My Opinion

Hello Guys,

As some of you may know, I own a Delta Essentials Handheld Vacuum Cleaner. I have mixed feelings over handheld vacuums. I think they are handy, well built and light. But then again, I think they lose power quickly, need constant emptying and they can be loud. Especially after a full charge. Ever since the Dyson DC16 Handheld was launched in 2006, I find myself more attracted to these machines. I would recommend family and friends to stay clear of cheap ones (like the Delta), and go for a Black & Decker or a Dyson instead, after all, my granddad has a 20 year old Dustbuster that is working well. I even started patroling eBay to look for a nice Dustbuster, and I suddenly became attracted to a particular type, which appear in my 2001 & 2002 Argos Catalog. These machines can be bought in purple, green, blue, yellow, brown, orange and may more.

Anyway, my dad really despises these machines, after we had two handhelds for picking up guinea pig poo. He also claims that they put more dust into the air than they pick up.

I was looking at videos of the Dyson handheld when I came across this test. I think it is very funny because they call James Dyson, John Dyson instead of James!

Please comment about this video and your opinions on handheld machines.

Hi Jabob,

I have a Black And Decker wet and dry dustbuster, similar the one in this link. I have laminate floor, and use this mainly for picking up loose cat litter and crumbs. It's nice and powerful, not too noisy and I haven't noticed any dust leaks. You have to remember, they are not designed for major cleaning tasks. They are there for the convenience of a quick pick up to avoid having to get the large vacuum out for little tasks. As I have pets, everyday I tend to have a quick whip over the laminate and "spot vac" with mine, then go over the rugs with the carpet sweeper to keep the place looking tidy and then do a big vacuum once a week.

hoover1: That looks like a Dustbuster, the original one. How old would it be?

Turbo500: My gran has just got this one, it replaced the Delta Essentials one she gave me. Does it perform well? I do understand that they are for small tasks only, like for instance if I spilt some salt.

I've had the cordless dustbusters, corded dirt devil handhelds, and a electrolux pronto 2 in 1.

My current favorite is an older corded Black & Decker Collector I found at a yard sale a few months back, it's bigger than a dustbuster and surprisingly very powerful. They had 2 of them, and I'm still kicking myself that I didn't get the other one as well, it's really a neat little vacuum.
