Cool I have never seen a Regina Broommate! Nice hand vac collection. I got my eye on that Dynomite too ,is it a 2 speed?

When I was a kid, my grandma on my mom's side had an old straight-suction G.E. hand vac, with a black bag with the old G.E. logo on it, and a metal (pot metal?) housing. Grandma would let me use it as long as I did not touch the radiator grille in the floor with the nozzle, because it would cause sparks to fly out. So that made me a bit afraid of it.

She would also let me use her Bissell sweeper, but not her pink G.E. -- that was off-limits!

Dynomite Super Power

Yes the Dynomite SP is indeed a two speed model. Lots of suction on high speed too!

did you know that Oreck bought the rights to the dynomite?
I remember them as being the Ironman and they had a power head added to it. It was a cheap Douglas power head. I don't know if the Kenmore had a PH with their's or not?

The Ironman / Dynomite was a Douglas product all along, along with many other Oreck machines. Douglas still makes it, and sells it under their name. They are a division of Scott & Fetzer, like Kirby.

I'm not sure what happened to the PN version. I looked at Oreck's web site, and the standard version is still there, at a ridiculous price of $299.99. I found the Douglas version selling for $89.99. Doing the math, the Oreck is 3.3 times as expensive.


Back to the original posts, I'm interested in the metros. They are still around, and produce hand vacs that are similar to those found here, along with a full size metal canister line. I'm wondering if anyone here actually owns one of the modern metros, and has any impressions. I'd also be interested to know how the history of the older models. As one of the last true metal vacuum holdouts, building a machine externally similar to what you could find on the market 50 or 60 years ago, I figured collectors would have taken greater interest in the brand. At the moment I can't think of any collectors that I know who owns one.

Metro hand Vacs and more

The earliest Metro hand vac I own is an avacado green unit from 1973 that is identical to the NIB brown machine in my pic above but has an older black cord and plug and different color bags. I have seen these from the 60's on Ebay and they use shorter more stubby bag and motor cover retainer ends and a more old fashioned assortment of tools. They are usually copper colored too from this time era. Here is a link to the current black 500 hand vac which is essentially the same unit that was sold back in the 60's and 70's but with a slightly more powerful motor and different tools. Sadly these hand vacs are gutless wonders when the bag has anything more than a few crumbs of dirt and are really only good for very light duty dusting. Still I think they are very neat and the fact that they have been around so long virtually unchanged is really quite something. The canisters I hear are quite powerful.

Thanks for the dates on the older hand helds. I see on their website "since 1939", so I have to wonder where they got started. I would guess they may have been into specialty products.
