[Habitat Restore Find] Eureka 2364 A

When stopping at my local Habitat Restore for a second time that week to go back for some weatherseal foam I seen there on the previous trip to fix my bathroom fan's vent cover from vibrating so loudly, what should greet me in the housewares aisle but this! I am so glad that Restore has a fixed price for vacuum cleaners ($20) that they never deviate from, because I am sure if this was at Goodwill someone would have put $60 on it just because it's chrome.

So I immediately picked it up and home with me it went! I've seen some of these Convertible-styled Eurekas scattered about on photos on this website before, but never seen any in chrome! I just couldn't believe how good of a shape it's in. I seen it had a local vacuum repair shop's sticker on it, but the font on the sticker looked like it was from the 1970's at least so I know it's been awhile since it was serviced.

If anyone knows what year it came out, that would be much appreciated. I have researched that it predates Eureka's serial number date code system, and I think it predates injection mold date wheels also.

Here's a closeup of the finish. You can see the streak marks where the Restore just quickly wiped it down with a rag, but a quick hand-polish with some Flitz should take care of those marks quickly. Even through the dirt, the shine is incredible!

Here's a shot of the underside. It was serviced who knows how long ago, but it still looks clean and hardly used after the service!

Here's a closeup of the inspection stamp on the belt cover. I am not sure if the belt cover is original or is a replacement part. I am also not sure if that number is the inspection year, or an employee number.

Assuming that this was not done when Restore tested the vacuum (from dry rot), this is most likely why the vacuum was donated. Man, I've never seen a belt this torn up that is still in one piece without snapping...it looks like a shark ate it!

There's a melted spot above the belt here, does anyone know if that is normal on these vacuums or was that just from the belt being too loose?

Here is a closeup of the cute holographic information tag on the outer bag (the inner paper bag that came with it is just packed solid with dirt, it's so hard-packed it feels like concrete)

Here's a shot of the Hi/Lo speed switch, very simple. It feels solid when activated, not loose and floppy as if it would be worn-out.

Here's a shot of the vacuum shop's repair tag. There is an older tag under this one and both of them have the adhesive totally dry-rotted, so they have been on here quite a long time. I know of this vacuum shop personally (but haven't been in it since 2003-ish) and they are still in business and doing very well for themselves with great reviews.

Sweet Eureka!

That “melted spot” is normal. In fact, it has not even been melted! That is a feature of the design; even my relatively modern S661 has it. That track serves as a guide fitting the belt. Look closely, and you will actually see the little rectangular outline around it from the mold.

Eureka 2364 A

This machine was a promotional model, that was offered alongside of the new 1976-77 Moss Green, Continental Eureka's, (the hood on your machine was referred to as that, the Continental series). The Eureka to the extreme left, was the TOL for that whole range!! The one like yours the 2364A, was a IIRC a two or MAYBE three model promotional series.. I have the dealer brochure.. But it's to home so...

I learned of this "sub-series, vac-store exclusive", from a former Eureka dealer, so I'm going on another's word here. OTOH, I have that brochure that pretty much solidifies ones recollection so. BUT I have also seen this model in a Aldens, or MAYBE Spiegel catalog too. So?

The original bag, as you see in the pic, would have been the floral blue bag, also found on the 1458A series.

I have at home the 1976-77 Eureka "The Money Makers" brochure featuring the whole range of models. Along with the full line of green models, there was also this unit in again that sub-series. One last thing. There was also a chrome hood waterfall style I suppose you'd call it; in the same colors just like the gold and cream one next to the one in this picture. No headlight.

To sum up, a model like yours, continued to be a vac shop exclusive, until 1979 at least, where the hood color went from a chrome look, to an off white like the unit with the gold bag below. This again, stayed a sub-series, and was offered alongside of the new for 1979 Brandywine ESP series units!!

It should clean up nicely.

I hope the belt is all it needs. I wouldn't be surprised at the number of people who would assume the vacuum was junk because it ran rough with that on.
Very easy fix.

I like that switch on the handle.

I have a sanitairre 8667. I replaced the f@g bag with arm@hammer bag. It run me $30 full bag assembly etc. It's red and vacuum runs better with it. I bought a new viba groom brush roll cost about $20. The belts are replaced frequently on these machines. I'd replace the belt and see how she runs
It's quite nice finding all metal eureka. I prefer it over plastic shell.
