I had an issue with the Platinum last night. I just had new carpeting installed so I was vacuuming after the carpet installer left. Suddenly the vacuum quit running. I looked at the control panel and the only light on was the red overheated. I unplugged the vac, opened the bag door and it was overflowing! I did not see the bag full light come on. I put in a new bag, made sure the hose was clear and let the vac cool down for about 1/2 hour but when I turned it on again all the blue lights came on as per normal however the motor did not turn on. After a couple of seconds the red overheat light came on again so I uplugged it again. I tried again after 2 hours and still the same thing. I left it overnight, turned it on this morning and now it is working normal. Is it supposed to take so long to cool down and reset? Shouldn't the bag full indicator have come on long before the motor overheated? I sure wish this vac shut off when the bag was full like the older style Lux's.

Why shouldn't the bag light come on? It works based on restricted air flow does it not? The air flow must have decreased until the point the bag light should have come on and then eventually there was no air flow so the motor overheated. Unfortunately there is no Aerus dealer in this area - the closest one is 2 hours away. I sent an email to the dealer I bought it from (in FL) to see what he has to say.

Like I said I don't have a 'local' dealer (I don't call 2 hours away as being local) so I will have to figure something out. I'm sure shipping it will be expensive as well. I did buy it from an authorized dealer and I also did the warranty registration on-line.

Carpet Fluff would not.....

I think the carpet fluff was not enough to reduce air flow enough to make the bag change indicator go off. However their was enough reduced air flow to overheat. Check your manual, it does take an hour or two sometimes depending on the vacuum before you can use it again.

I just checked the users manual and it just says to plug it back in after finding the clog. With that said I looked at the Lux Legacy and it says to wait a hour or more before trying to vacuum. Like everything else, the Lux Guardian Platinum doesn't include all the info we need. I have decided to trade mine in for a 90th anniversary Lux Legacy, they have been my favorites, since the metal body's were discontinued.

May bee a bit off topic here but one thing I dislike about Thermal cut outs is that They tend to only switch the motor off when the motor has already overheated. You then get Heat sink were although the motor is off it is now red hot and has no way but heat dissipation to cool it down often causing damage that may not show straight away but will shorten the life of the motor. Running a motor that has overheated ( once clear ) is a far better way to cool it down to operating temp. On some big heavy duty Nilfisk vacuums the machine would open a trap door allowing the motor to run and cool down if the blockage was not removed

Listen to Dan

Countryguy,
I'd listen to KirbyloverDan, he knows his Electroluxes. Also, carpet fluff is hell on vacuums. I would never suggest vacuuming a new carpet with anything BUT a 'dirty fan' upright like a Sanitaire or Kirby with dump-out bag set up. At least call your Lux dealer and ask what he suggest, but Dan is right about taking it somewhere for service under the warranty.

Justin,

Although I do have a few vacuums, I do not have any that are bagless or with shake out bags. And I would think that most consumers that are not vac collectors, only own 1 vacuum. Thus, there would be no choice other than to use the Platinum on new carpeting and the Platinum should be able to handle it without overheating i.e. the bag check light should come on since there is restricted air flow. I filled up a 2nd bag with the carpet fibres while paying extra careful attention to see if the bag full indicator light would come on but it did not. I've had the vac since last November and so far have only changed the bag twice.

Gary

That's why I suggest having Aerus look at the machine obviously there is a problem with the thermostat your machine is under warranty and continual use will VOID your warranty I was an Aerus service person . I have also owned a vacuum shop and have repaired all brands for over 30 years .
Get that vacuum looked at ASAP .

slightly off topic

Just curious, does an abundance of carpet fuzz cause the amazing Rainbow (and other water filtration vacuums) any problems?

New carpet fluff-this can QUICKLY fill vacuum bags and NOT trip the bag full indicator or device in the vacuum. You have to check the bag yourself.Wonder if some carpet fluff got into the motor chamber? For Rainbow I NEVER dump the water bin in ANY of my plumbing-instead I dump it outside.Remember when the Rainbow salesman says-"Rainbow is the only cleaning system that picks up the dirt and and keeps it out of your house."My house is on a septic tank-think the Rainbow debris will clog it.And for those on a sewer line-the Rainbow debris can clog the line from your house to the main sewer line. The Roto Rooter man will love you if you dump your Rainbow bin into your plumbing system.

No the carpet fluff did not get into the motor chamber as there is a Hepa filter after the bag.

My house is on a septic system as well. When I had my black Rainbow I always dumped the water basin outside or into a large empty cat litter pail. I had a fine meshed sieve on top of the container to catch the large debris which I dumped in the garbage and then emptied the container in the sink.

My gut feeling is that you probably didn't ruin the machine. Isn't the point of the thermal lock-out to kill the motor before it kills itself? Unless the thermal lock-out is horribly ineffective, I'd imagine it turned the motor off before the point that damage would occur. But then again, I don't work for Aerus, so don't listen to me.

This is yet another strike against the Guardian Platinum. I know it's probably an excellent machine, and this probably would have happened to any bagged vaccum, but still... it makes me leery of the device and the fact that Aerus collaborated to create it. I hope they have no plans to discontinue the Lux Legacy (or Classic) lines. Those machines are tried-and-true at this point, and looks-wise they've gone from modern, to contemporary, to dated, to old, to nostalgic, and all the way back to retro over the past 30 years, so they technically should be really cool and chic these days, if Aerus would ever advertise to capitalize on that retro charm. Sorry for getting off-topic. =)

I hope your vac gets fixed! I'm sure they'll look into it. The GP seems like an awesome machine. I wished I had enough cash for it when I bought my 90th Legacy, but I preferred the vintage look anyways.

Also, do you really have to turn in a registration card? My Legacy didn't come with one...
