I didn't do too bad for myself... considering this was in my neighbours skip! I was walking round my neighbourhood about 8 months back and saw a dark green handle pointing at the skip. they had also binned a cabinet which was on top of the hoover which was very heavy. I pulled and pulled and pulled and eventually released the hoover from the skip. it was in a right state. it was black with MUD and dust and I thought, I might as well put this back in the skip because it clearly wont work... but just in case.... I ended up taking the 90s hoover purepower back to my house and when I plugged it in it burst into life!!! I looked at the brushroll and it wasn't spinning so I unscrewed the cover of the head and the belt had just slipped off the metal bar! I hooked it back over and it spun round. I couldn't of bin more happy! I tested the suction and it sucked amazingly!! I cleaned it up a bit and well... here we have it... a green hoover purepower from the late 90s!!! it enen has all the attachment's!!!

Glad you came along at the right time for this one! Honestly, people are so quick to throw things away. All it takes is a little bit of time and patience to get a machine like this back in shape.

I am too! some people are just so wasteful. I am sort of glad they skipped it though because if they didn't it wouldn't be mine they would still have it. I cant understand why they stopped putting the bag check indicators on the later pure powers. I have a red pure power which I bought three years ago and this green model is far better!!!

Cost of producing the cleaner Jake, that's why.

If you compare the prices of the first Pure Power cleaners to that of the later models, you will see that whilst inflation was on the up, the price of household appliances was on the way down. The price on the sales ticket didn't even stay the same, that went down too.

Using an online inflation calculator, I can tell you that a bottom-range Pure Power vacuum cleaner selling for £130 in 1997 would have had to sell for £169 in 2007 in order for it to be the "same" price and allowing for inflation.

Even if the same type of cleaner sold for £130 in 2007, that would been a significant drop in prices as the cleaner was selling for the samew price despite inflation.

And yet that was not what happened. What happened was the selling price of a bottom-range Pure Power in 2007 was not £169, in fact it was almost half of that, at around £90. So in it's broadest sense, a Pure Power purchased in 1997 was selling for HALF that price ten years later.

So how do they do it? Well the cleaner has to be made cheaper and cheaper, that's how. Not fitting a bag-full indicator would have saved a lot of money on parts, but also would have saved on the transportation and storage of those parts. But by far the biggest saving would have been on labour - the assembly costs of each cleaner would have been significantly lower without the bag-full lamp. You may not think that when looking at one machine, but if Hoover were rolling off, say, 10,000 cleaners a week, that is a massive cost saving.

This is why I am never sure why people say Dysons now cost more money than ever. They don't, it's just that the prices have been consistent with inflation. A £250 Dyson in 1997 is the same as paying £420 today. So it's about the same.

You mention labour costs in that, in 2007 the PurePower range was assembled in China instead of in Cambuslang, enabling the cheaper price.

thanks for answering my question vintagerepairer. what I cant understand now is that on the later pure powers like the red and grey one that is in my shed, on further studying I have noticed a blanking plate where the bag check indicator l.e.d would have been, surely it is cheaper even more still to miss out the blanking plate all together?

Suction selector, what you say is very true, but still it doesn't matter where something is made, if there is less of it then it is cheaper to make.

Jake, is it a blanking plate or is it a continuous formation with a groove in the plastic? I think you will find it is the latter.

Either Hoover had two moulds to make the plastic front- one which allowed for a hole and one without- or else they drilled out the hole for a bagfull lamp. I don't know what Hoover did in this instance, but based on vacuum cleaner production in general I can say that either is a possibility depending on the choices they made when designing this cleaner.

If it is a blanking plate, the cost of blanking off a hole would need to be offset against the massive expense of purchasing a new mould to make the same plastic part. Mouilds to make plastic parts cost tens of thousaands of pounds and a lot of production is needed to make spending that sort of money worthwhile. This will be why the last models of the original Turbopower cleaners had a blanking plate in the back of the handle where the switch used to be, rather than making a handle which had no hole to blank off. Hoover had already changed the mould at least once to incorporate a Hoover logo on the front of it, but that was done long before they dispensed with the switch on the back and could well have coincided with the need to replace the mould anyway.

Yes in that case then it's a complete moulding rather than a hole with a blank.

Other vacuums have that little moulding thing aswell where something should be. For example, a Dyson DC04 silver lime we have has a blob of plastic under where the filter wash indicator should be on the Constant Max.
My Auntie has a 2012 Henry, right before the park feature was introduced a few months later, it had a rectangular thing with a line in the middle so it could have hinted a change (the park feature)

The mould is probably the same, they just stopped popping out the bag light blank when they stopped fitting it.

Hoover also stopped fitting their variable suction control on the higher end Purepower uprights.

I miss the variable suction control. it is so use .full if you need to do something like curtains.
