So I popped into a Cashland Financial on my way to meeting a friend (for those who aren't familiar, they give loans and pawns for items, and those who do not return for their item it becomes property of the store and is sold off). Not expecting anything to happen I saw a Kirby Avalir, and THEN I noticed the price. $149. Not bad at all. I tried it out, it was in good shape, sounded good, and did not reek of pets or smoke. After going back and forth the lady gave me a 10% discount, and I walked out happy and with a new toy! When she came home with me it got all service and buffed out. This one did not take much! It's in great shape. This one should be in service for many years to come.

Amazing how easy it is to find a late model kirby second hand at drastically reduced prices. Try that with Meile, Sebo, Aerus or Rainbow - not nearly as easy. And why a family with such limited resources that they run the risk of pawning their things to pay bills would buy such an expensive vacuum defies logic. If finances are that tenuous, I'd suggest a broom and dust pan.

I have a couple of much older Kirbies (early 60's) and they are fine vacuums. Wouldn't be my choice if I could only have one, but good cleaners. Maybe people find them too heavy. Or perhaps salesmen target folks who don't manage money well. For whatever reason.

I would venture to say

When an expensive, late model vac is in the pawn shop.

The finance company is probably looking for it too.

They bought it for nothing down, probably made one payment, if that, and pawned it for beer money.  No intentions of redeeming the pawn.
