Greasing Hoover Bearings

I know this subject was discussed on here in an earlier post. I need to find out how to grease top bearing and really need to know how to grease bottom motor and agitator bearings if you don't have one of the nifty Hoover grease gun fittings.. Or maybe someone has an extra fitting for sale that I could buy?? Please Help!!!! Dan

I can tell you right now those videos don't work, I knew the user and he closed his account (for the second time).

Hoover convertible bearings,,

I hope this helps,,But I have to warn you,,be real carefull! On the top bearing of the motor, I just use turbine oil,,it soaks into the bearing real well. On the bottom, I end up placing the bottom case over a board with a 1 1/2 inch hole in it,,you then have to bend the retaining tabs of the bearing holder upright, and push the entire metal down out of the plastic case,, then you can access the bearing and pack it with proper grease. Keep in mind this only works on the ones with tabs. The beater bar bearings cana be easlily removed by unscrewing the end caps,remove the retaining clips and push the bearing out, Most have small covers, and you have to insert the oil bewteen the washer and the bearing case.. If they are the original bearings you'll probably get better results just replacing them with new bearings that have been freshly oiled and greased.

This is how I service the bearings on my Convertibles though.

The top bearing is the easiest to maintain, all you need is some 3-in-1 oil (the one with the blue label) and some Q-tips. Place a few drops of oil on a q-tip and swab out the inside of the bearing. Repeat until the Q-tip comes out clean. Fill up the bearing with oil once and let it soak into the felt wick. The original bearing does not have a wick so this step in unnecessary if you are working with one of those. Wipe the motor shaft with a clean towel and place a drop or two of oil on the motor shaft and spread it around with your fingertip and you're done.

The roller bearings need grease, not oil. Use a good quality grease like Mobil 1 synthetic or Polyrex EM. The first step is to dissolve all the old grease and gunk which has accumulated. Soak the bearing in some acetone and use a toothbrush to give it a good scrubbing. When the bearing is completely clean the balls should be shiny and it should spin freely with no resistance. To repack them, apply a layer of grease, pack it down with a flathead screwdriver. Spin it around a few times by hand and use a Q-tip to remove any excess.

You can inject grease into the lower bearing with a blunt tip syringe. The felt washer can be removed with a straight edge razor. Turn the bearing around by hand as you are injecting the grease in order to spread it around.
