I was looking through Facebook market place the other night and came across this Kirby Sentria for sale for like $20. I figured why the hell not and picked it up after work. Ran it for a bit but didn’t actually use it cause it has no bag and everything seems to be in great shape. I’m thinking all we need here is a good clean and polish and a little general maintenance, I figured we got a nice new vacuum for the collection! I’ll post pics after I get the work on that finished, also I would like to ask for any tips on how to get the clasps for the bottom of the brush roll to move the are rusted shut and I’m not sure if they can be saved but I’d like to try. I’m thinking penetrating fluid or WD40?

W-40 or similar and a pair of pliers to work the claps a little has helped me a few times free them up. Or a Dry lubricant. That won't drip and leave oily stains. I have some at work but can't think of the name of it at the moment.

So I’m gonna try to get the clasp to move using WD40 or I’m also going to try some acid polish I bought that my work uses for polishing the machines and see what happens, also gonna wash the outer bag to see how that comes out. Wish me luck!

Yikes!

Looks like somebody has been over-doing it with the vacuum-killing carpet fresh powder :o

Try a penetrating lube called Liquid Wrench. Spray it on and let it sit for a few minutes, then try moving the latches with a pair of pliers. It'll break loose quickly.

Underneath all that grime, you've got a nice Sentria, just waiting to shine through! Keep us posted and show us the end result—and maybe some of the intermediate stages, too.

I’m pretty sure it was stored in a garage or something just by looking at the discoloration of the aluminum and the various area with corrosion but I think you’re right once it’s cleaned up all nice and pretty it’ll be a awesome cleaner. I’m actually hella pumped to get working on it and definitely will have more pictures to come!

I love my Kirbys a lot but in all honesty I use my Rainbow as my full house cleaner and then my Concept One or Discovery 2 as my daily, The Rainbow is more convenient imo when I’m cleaning with how I can just pop the attachments on and go while moving through my house. The Concept and Discovery 2 are just good vacuums that are quick to pull out use and put away. I will say though I do love how the carpet feels after I vacuum and fluff it with the Kirby.

Update

So I washed the bag last night and it cleaned up about how I expected good, but the stains I thought would stay on did, oh well it doesn’t look to bad. I finally got the base plate off using baking soda and water to break it free so I got that taken care of for the time being but I think in the long run I’m going to have to replace the whole floor head eventually cause I just don’t see me getting those clasp in right order. Cleaned some of the parts in the tub to get rid of any dirt, corrosion and build up and holy crap there was so much carpet powder. Game plan today is to polish them up and get it back together, it’ll still be a few days before I use it cause I’m waiting on bags and belts to come in. Also @louvac I will when I get a chance :)

Emtor

If you get deeper in a teardown. I'd suggest cleaning the between fan and emtor. There is a white molding that gets funked up. The first sentria I got for free had a melted piece of plastic stuck on it.
It does get dirty around it if you teardown that far.
Nice cleanup job so far. You will enjoy the sentria it's tech drive is silky smooth.

Oh yes I too like the way the Tech drive handles on the Sentria model over the previous models.

My Mother likes the way the Sentria handles compared to the G 4 she used for a while.

I currently don’t have the set up to tear it that far apart right now unfortunately but my hopes is once work settles down again and I get more time to myself I wanna get back to that point. So far it’s not to bad but I do think I will need to find a new floor nozzle assembly cause the aluminum has become pitted in certain areas, the bumper guard hides it but knowing it’s there bothers me.
