I went to goodwill yesterday to see what I could find, and I ended up finding an old vintage Hoover Stick broom. I’ve mostly cleaned it out (about 95%, there’s still a little stubborn crud I couldn’t remove with dawn or mister clean). I tested it today. It’s loud, and the fan is rubbing up against the plastic (but it still turns). Is it normal for the cleaner to be loud or the fan to not spin very freely (even if it’s intact)?

A friend had a similar machine, with similar problem last year. Disassemble showed that the threads on the fan were stripped out and it wouldn't stay attached to the motor shaft, I could not get parts ☹️. Good luck!

"-normal-"

Yes!Sadly. Was typical with that style. If you can find a fan it looks similar to Elite & is identified by spot of red paint in center.Interesting 90s find but Hoovers best brooms were 60s-70s with dirt in paper bag and not hitting fan.

That sucks.

I have a forest green one of these for sale, runs beautifully and has a lot of power but needs a dust cup seal. If you are interested in it let me know, I have no use for it.

Quik Broom

I would bet that the blind sided fan is stripped out and thus causing the fan to hit on the back side of the housing. You will need a replacement fan. Note that to take these apart requires cleaning all the caked in dirt down the 4 holes right directly under the dirt cup after it is removed from the machine. This and the dirt cup seal are two weaknesses of these machines along with the rather narrow fan housing dirt path. Yours does have the deluxe wheel nozzle so that is a plus. Fans can be found occasionally on Ebay and I do have a source to a few extras if needed.

These were indeed very similar to a Regina Electrikbroom but Hoover didn't get the dirt cup sealing and actuation part nearly as well as Regina did and the Regina's had a properly designed deeper cut fan that the shaft went right through with tightening nut at the end. Hoover had a blind sided plastic fan that screwed onto the shaft directly. After a while the heat and pressure would loosen the fan and would eventually strip it on the shaft causing the issue yours is experiencing. Still if you can get a hold of a fan this can be fixed for a time.

We had 3 of these

All with same issue. We were able to replace the fans back then and it was in the late 80s or early 90s when we got them. Mom had an earlier model with the paper bag, never had issues except for the plastic top and the plastic motor housing which we were able to replace but the machine ran well for 30 years for daily kitchen and family room cleanups.

The fans in the quick broom || ‘s would get out of whack from the dirt going through them. The quality of the plastic was not as good as the Regina Electrikbrooms. These were Hoover’s copy of the Regina. Poor change I felt.

Nice looking stick vac.
I have one that was a Goodwill find, also three speed. But, mine is blue, and doesn't have the wheels on the floor nozzle, or the little grab handle.
I hope you can get it working right!
