I'm selling my gold plated Kirby collection over the next week. Up first is the Ultimate G. I will also be listing the gold plated G5, as well as the gold plated "Golden Trophy" Tradition model. All three are on eBay starting today.

The first time I ever heard of a gold-plated Kirby was from Stan Kann. He told me about how when he was living in Hollywood, his friend Phyllis Diller gave him one. Quoting from my interview with him:

<blockquote>
"She gave it to me for Christmas. She called me and said she had a gift for me. She wouldn’t let on what it was. She always gives me something for Christmas. She said the chauffeur is going to come by with it, and he’ll ring the bell. That’s when I was living at the Penthouse on Rossmore.

So after a while, along comes the guy. I went downstairs and, my God, here are these two boxes! I asked, “What’s in this?” He didn’t know, either. One box was rather tall, and it was all decorated like a chimney Santa Claus on the top, coming down it. Then it had this funny little peak sticking up, where the handle wouldn’t fit in the whole box. Then there was another box that had all the attachments, decorated in some other kind of way. I still didn’t know what it was. So I got it upstairs and the first thing I did was open the top where this funny peak was. I looked down and there was the handle for that gold Kirby. I had only seen it once at her house. I opened the box, and there was this gold vacuum cleaner!"

He didn't recall which model it was, but from what I could figure out it was a Kirby Classic III with the plaid bag -- he said it had a very "busy bag" and a big square thing you turn to release the belt.

Charles - it's "collectingvacs".

I remember Stan talking about this to me several time (the gold Kirby Christmas gift). He said that he gave it away to someone - presumably to use to clean their home with.

Yes, Tom, exactly. He, not really into Kirbys in general and newer ones in particular, didn't give a hoot about such a recent model. So he gave it to a friend who needed a vacuum cleaner.

He said that the reason the Kirby Company sent Phyllis Diller the Kirby was due to their appreciation to her because she mentioned on a national talk show one day that the Kirby was the best vacuum cleaner available!

You surely recall that the opening credits for her short-lived television show "The Pruitts of Southampton" showed her using a Kirby vacuum, a Sanitronic IIRC.
