Goblin vacuum cleaners at Asda

Saw a couple of Goblin branded vacs at Asda today, but can't find them online. Looking under the boxes It says made for Asda, so I assume the Goblin brand is only available there at the moment.

Wow, not seen the Goblin name on a vacuum for a while. The cylinder is a TTI machine. I've seen it branded Vax. Not seen the hand vac before - I can't imagine where the inspiration for THAT came from. I do hope Mr. D doesn't shop at Asda, otherwise I smell yet another lawsuit.

It is very similar to the Vax Power cylinders with a few cosmetic differences, but I expect it is the same machine underneath. The stick vac looks interesting, but both vacs score poorly on the EU label.

The cylinder is priced at £44.96 with the stick vac at £34.96. If Asda knock five or ten pounds off the stick, I may be tempted as it could be OK for a quick clean up on my kitchen floor or doing the stairs.

Dyson

Unless the cleaner is trying to do what Dyson does, I can't see the problem? Unless of course Dyson has somehow protected his own wares from anyone who makes something which looks like it.

The brand "Goblin" has been part of the Glen-Dimplex group for years. Either it's been sold to someone else (Such as Asda or TTI) or else they've done a deal for their name to be used - either buying stock from another company, or leasing the right to use their name. Daft as it sounds, I'm sure there is still a value in the Goblin name amongst people who remember it.

Has the stick vacuum got a rotating brush or is it just a standard floorhead?


 


They look interesting enough, but will the quality/value for money ratio equate to the Goblin's of past generations?

I am not sure which way you are going with that, seeing how Goblin was always bottom-end quality. Are you asking if it will be better than, worse than, or equal to?

Well, Morphy Richards, who also have Goblin are no strangers to labels and other machines.

The Supervac cordless dust buster upright 732000 I bought weeks ago has been fantastic to use and though I wondered about where it was made, it turns out to be badged as a Hoover Heritage 5210 in Australia. Hoover products in Australia stem from TTI...

The goblin stick vac also appears in the U.S. on sale from wards with a different floor head and with fairly positive reviews (and a high price). I would still like to get my hands on an original goblin rio one day, sad we didn't get them.


 


Sebofan, that supervac also appears under the hoover brand here in the U.S. I really like it too, we had one where I work and it is a very good performer. Your review on it was enjoyable as always.

Goblin in US

It's a wonder that the Goblin name -and indeed some of the cleaners such as the Rio- did not appear in the USA when you think that ShopVac bought up Goblin in the UK around 1985. During the late 1990's, Goblin was acquired by Glen-Dimplex, the same company who had earlier bought Morphy Richards, amongst many other well-known UK brands. That's why the UK has had so much cross-branding across product ranges, though it seems that Dimplex are now venturing outside of their own group to source products.

Sebo fan, another thing I just noticed is that your "supervac" is much more expensive than the U.S. hoover "presto" which can normally be found for about 60$ which converts to under 40 pounds! I suppose over here it's a real bargain!

The US did have a similar-yet-different version of the Rio cylinder, known as the Shop Vac Mighty Mini. Biggest difference being that theirs used paper bags, which I can't help but feel would have been a vast improvement over the messy cloth filter setup we had over here. As to whether the Rio or MM came first, I don't know. Chicken and egg that one.

Scott - yes, the prices greatly differ in the UK compared to the US but then its like most things, vac related. Whilst I understand that SEBO & Miele vacs in the UK are cheaper to buy (but are no means cheaply priced) they are better value than the cost prices in the U.S - but then one has to remember tax and duty charges etc.

At the most I have seen the Supervac priced at £70 which I wasn't able to get due to my location - around $111-12

Just bought the stick vac today as it was on Rollback to £25 in my local Asda.

It's not too bad, but the tools could be better. I think it will fit standard 32mm push fit tools so I can use some better tools including a turbo brush with it.

Oh, nice one Roger. How is the suction on it? Would it be any good for cleaning the car? We're on the hunt for a new car vac.

Why would you have to hunt for any other cleaner, Chris, when you have SEBO...

The suction is OK, better than a rechargeable vac but not as good as a full sized cylinder. I don't think it would be very good for carpet cleaning, but OK for quick pick ups. My full Youtube review should cover everything you need to know, but I won't be uploading it for a few weeks. I'll add to this thread any thoughts in the meantime as I use the cleaner a bit more.
