Goblin Solo/Royale?

Right, i'm going to give you guys a little sneak peak of what my next set of youtube vids will be based on. Here is a very nice but slightly discoloured c1984 Goblin Solo Deluxe that i've just finished cleaning up for Ric.

Now, while I was working on this one, I had a flashback. When I was about 5, my nans boss (she was a personal assistant) had what I remember being a Goblin Royale at his house. Now we're going back 20 odd years now so my memory is vague, however I remember it being like a bigger Solo, it was either grey or cream, it had variable power and 2 indicator lights red and orange. I also remember it being a hell of a lot quieter compared to my nans basic Solo at the time.

If anyone can shed some light on this I'd be very grateful, like i say, I might be talking rubbish because it is a long time ago but i'm pretty sure it was called a Royale. If anyones got any brochure scans or pics i'll be even more chuffed.

Thats a nice vac, I remember seeing something that looked similar badged as a shopvac model in the early 2000's It was billed a s portable.

Strange, Goblin must have sold the design. we had them here from around 1983-1991. They weren't bad little vacuums. My nan had 2 one for upstairs one for downstairs

actually if you look on many of the old goblin wet&dry vacuums underneath the motor mounting they had a shopvac logo stamped in, I think there was some sort of deal between the two company's , early plastic shopvacs and goblins shared allot of motor cover parts two

well, we've got a bit of an arrangement going lol he lets me put them on my Youtube channel. That way I get a very varied and interesting Youtube channel that attracts even more subscribers and he gets his vacs that have been sitting in garages for years cleaned up and repaired and shown for the world to see lol

Shop vac bought Goblin in the early 1980s. Shop Vac cleaners had been sold in the UK under the name Aqua Vac and after the acquisition of Goblin you could see the names Aqua Vac, Goblin-Aqua Vac, and Goblin being used across a good deal of wet & dry cleaners. A completely new set of tools was designed, made out of black plastic and they fitted in the opposite direction from most cleaners, they were like the Hoover and indeed a good deal of Hoover tools have turned up attached to Goblin cleaners over the years. These tools were used across the wet & dry and basic dry ranges.

The Royale was deep red coloured Solo cleaner made for the Rumberlows chain. It had no variable power and in place of a castor at the front the was merely a solitary wheel, like on basic Solo cleaners. But there was a bag-full lamp and cord winder. Ryry, the bigger cream cleaner you mention sounds very much like the Goblin Omni. These were a far bulkier cleaner than the Solo and I do not think they were built by Goblin, but purchased by Goblin before the Shop Vac acquisition and branded with the Goblin name. The tubes were big and bulky, possibly 38mm and terminated into a swivel top fitting on the cleaner, a lot like the Philips on sale at the same time. The most distinguishing feature of them were the four integrated rollers in the rear of the cleaner which allowed the cleaner to be stood on end and pulled along, if indeed one dared to do so. I found a sketch of it online after a lot of searching, but sadly no real picture.

hmmm definitely wasn't an Omni, i know someone who's got one of them. Thinking back, It may have been the later grey Solo deluxe. I spose it would've seemed bigger at the time because I was smaller.

Gary I found this on the internet which may or may not be of interest to you. It is about the history of Goblin. "A production site was set up in Birmingham in 1965 to produce Goblin's upright vacuum cleaners. By 1971 the electronics company BSR had bought Swan and Goblin to diversify their operations. In 1984 the US-owned company Shop Vac Corporation bought Goblin from BSR".

the royale and the solo

i remeber my mums friend having a solo with variable power it had a slider control between the cord and power pedals and i do remeber seeing a grey goblin called the goblin royale but this one had metal extension tubes

maybe I was right! i'm sure the one I used as a kid was a big grey Solo in grey with metal tubes
