I think our carpets then, damn I remember the big excitement getting wall to wall Dupont 501 Sculpted Antique Gold, I think were a bit tougher to clean. And we only had the Compact straight suction canister.

Those powders are what helped put the end on Connies.
When the cleaner "floats on air", it sends a duststorm all over. I never use it. I know people who put the little cork pellets in their vacuums. It smells nice and doesn't harm anything or anyone.

Now that does sound messy, I admit.

cant belive its still around its evil stuff and it dont work it just masks smells the only way to get rid of smells is to clean the dirt away not cover it up sometime in the early 70s i remember my mum and dad taking up the lounge [fitted] carpet taking it outside laying it on the patio my mum then scrubbed it with a hoover polisher fitted with the scrubbing brushes she used ordinary washing powder somthing like Ariel it was then draped over the garden wall where my dad hosed it down with fresh water you could actually see the dirt being flushed out it looked like new after spending all day in the hot sun and all night they brought it back in the house and put it back down it looked great and smelled fresh two years later after 6 kids and a dog had trampled all over it the whole operation was repeated

I've read that carpet freshener powders are full of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). I use Oreck Fresh Air tabs, not sure if they release VOCs or not. My mom uses a little bit of carpet freshener powder on the rugs in her room, and she uses my Hoover T Series to clean it up. It does really does coat the foam pre-motor filter. I've thought about buying a canister of the Oreck carpet freshener crystals and asking her to try that instead of the carpet powder she uses. I really dislike the scent of those freshener powders.

I don't use it. Even in fan first machines, like Kirby, it can damage the motor. The air intake for cooling air is gliding very close to the carpet and is able to suck in the particles that can stick to bearings and motor winding.

I have used Glade Shake n' Vac NUMOROUS times and I have to say I have never had an issue with it getting through the bags and filters, not any more than just normal dust would, anyway.
I usually use it when the bag needs to be changed, vacuum it up and then put in a fresh bag and just give it another go over with the machine at maximum efficiency, I do like the novelty of using the stuff and I personally think it smells great, especially the "Magnolia & Vanilla" or "Citrus".
I have found Shake n' Vac to be more of a salt type consistency, than a powder...Using these products once in a while will not hurt your cleaner, they are deffinately more economical to use in a bagless, multi cyclonic cleaner as there is no clogging or wasting bags.

I've personally never used that crap and have no intention of ever doing so. That shit will absolutely kill a vacuum cleaner and it does stink. My next door neighbor, who is a heavy smoker, uses it and I can smell it outside her front door, even when the door is closed. Ironically, what I smell inside my apartment is the damn smoke from her ciggies.
I've picked up a number of vacuum cleaners from beside the dumpster at my apartment over the years I've lived where I am. I've cleaned them up, used them, passed them on to others, donated them to charity and occasionally sold even one. Every one of them, with maybe one or two exceptions, has been absolutely caked with that stuff. Clearing the vacuum powder out and replacing the bag and the belt is usually all any of them need, although the damage is quite evident when compared to a machine that has never been exposed to it.

Used it in the eights until I bought a VAX MODEL 101 in March 1986.
It struck me that s n v had a consistency between a finely grated deodorant stick and washing powder; the smell never lasted long, even in the cloth bag of the cleaner we were using at the time: a hoover 612.
I repaired /rebuild cleaners in those days,mainly uprights for a paying hobby and found shifting s n v build-up a difficult and labourious task.
Use the steam or spray extraction type machine.

They did, and do. Not knowing what is in their formula can't say it is good or not. However, just because something is on the market doesn't mean it is good. You can buy cigarettes at the local store, doesn't mean it's good for you.

He said to me it hasn't been sounding right for the last few weeks. So I plugged it in and turn it on. It sounded awful! A real dry high pitched noise.
I looked at it and asked have they been sucking up lots of fine dust (Plaster dust,flour etc.) "Oh no"...the customer said.
"Are you sure?" I said as the machine looked dusty. Inside and out. I said what about carpet freshener?? Oh yes "she" uses that. I said "well there you go."
I asked did they wash the filter regular and he said they did....
I just told him to contact Dyson direct and see what they say.
I didn't want to say I doubt Dyson would repair it under guarantee with it being self inflicted.
I'm glad they didn't buy it off me

James - how about bicarbonate of soda - its quite a fine powder, so does that damage parts as well?
And that, James, is why I always say that if you're going to use carpet powder (which you shouldn't AT ALL) then at least use a bagged vacuum cleaner to minimise damage.
The fine powder can get through a bagless machine's filters and into the motor easier than it can get past a paper bag (which is a filter in itself) PLUS filters.

The fine powder can also get through any vacuum cleaner that hasn't been sealed properly, regardless of whether it is bagged or bagless - cue Anthony's post about the Hometek light n easy.

Umm when it comes to bicarbonate of soda I'm not sure is the honest answer.
I'm guessing it's how often you use it plus the amount your picking up.
If you use it allot in a cyclonic vacuum it might have a bigger impact than a decent bagged machine. Especially if the cyclonic machine is not well maintained when your using it with bicarbonate of soda or other fine/finer powders.

I wondered as I watched a U.S Mom on You Tube show the gen public how to make cost effective home made carpet freshener using cinnamon powder and bicarbonate powder. She made the right decision to use cinnamon alone as it neutralises dog odour in an instant as well as less headache inducing. I was a bit concerned with the amount of soda powder though as effective as it is at neutralising as well, it is a great thinner in terms of consistency than ground cinnamon powder alone.

Its not a case of that at all, NYC.
i was interested as my family have a holiday rental and its left inhabited for long periods at a time. Normally when I visit I take my Bissell carpet washer with me as the place reeks of dogs. After usage when the rooms smell good and when I visit again they lack that doggy smell though there is a certain dank odour in the rooms even when windows have been left open slightly to let air circulate. I also wash the walls with my excellent U.S E-Mop.
That is the reason for why I'd like to put down bicarb powder and cinnamon into the carpet. I have reed diffusers in some rooms which works a treat but the carpets, though plainly have been washed a couple of times to ensure all manner of dirt is now out of them needs another application of something that will keep them odour free when the property isn't being used.

I have also used SEBO's DUO P powder in the past but I dont like to waste that, rather keeping it for its stain removal aspect.
Cinnamon does appear to work well though and it makes my SEBO Felix smell lovely though I remembered to change over the charcoal filter to the standard one before vacuuming up after laying it down for a good couple of days.

Sahke and vac, as a Kid I loved it now however I see at least 15 vacuums a week in with powder damage. It clogs up the pours in bags and filters so fast.
Agitator brush bearings don't like it either.
As far as dry powder cleaning goes, I find as a cleaning process its rather ineffective as it cannot get the deep down dirt out, That said I use it as a maintenance system.
I also find that it to causes vacuums to come in in droves, Mainly because people are to hasty to vacuum it up again and it clogs the airways when its still damp.

Sorry, no, Dysons can get messy when clogged with the stuff.
Actually I ruined our DC01 with vacuuming up shake n vac - the motor just wasn't sealed enough when I took it apart to see how much travel the powder exerts. The side motor filters were leaking the powder when I pulled them out.

Carpet powders- a fix for modern living
Evil machine-destroying stuff foisted upon a gullible public by clever marketing men, a 'quick-fix' patch for another problem with our modern lifestyle (here in the U.K. anyway), along with 'Febreeze', etc. The source of the problem is lack of ventilation in modern housing, coupled with Central Heating. Homes built prior to the 1950s had a chimney in each of the living rooms, and a constant 'flue draught' ensured that carpets remained dry and fresh (if a little dusty!!). Now, in the interests of 'energy efficiency' rooms have restricted ventilation, and the residents' breathing, cooking, and laundry moisture is trapped in the rooms, where it condenses onto the coolest surface (the floor). Net result carpets smell 'musty' because they are full of moulds living in the damp dirt trapped in the pile.
Solution:- Open all the doors and windows as soon as the weather is dry enough, leave until the carpets have dried, then either take them up and beat them, or vacuum them to within an inch of their lives. It's called a 'Spring-Clean', what a revolutionary, new-fangled idea... ;-)

I hate any kind of powder you pour on your carpet. HATE THEM ALL. I used it once at my parent's demand, and after 6 months, the smell is STILL in my Sebo X4!
