...ok guys...

So I now have this GE canister that I won on ebay and paid way too much for...but it's only money and I really like the damn thing! Luckily it arrived in perfect condition. The cord is original (I think-it's black with the stopper thingy on the end) and is in excellent shape. There are no skinned areas and/or cracks and the inside is very clean with no rust or the like. The cloth bag was also very clean and only took a few shakes to rid the fine dust trapped in the pores. Overall it's in really, really nice shape. The check indicator light also works!

Can any of you GE canister gurus tell me if there is supposed to be a bag ring to this model? It did not come with one. The pink GE paper bags which I have tend to tear when installing them without this ring. The older swivel-tops had an aluminum one however, I think that this model may have had a plastic one? Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone have a spare one for sale? The machine came with only the hose and no attachments. If anyone has a spare set for sale I would also be interested in knowing that, too!

Thanks guys!
Louis

Very nice machine Louis, any idea when it was made? Seems like I can remember them.

A beautiful GE & hose, Lou!

Did it come with all the matching tools, too?

Don't you fret none about the cost, Lou...I feel the same way about my eBay pink...er...salmon Swiveltop. The shipping to Canada was more than the vac but it's in superb condition and has all the important parts. Just missing the salmon plastic dusting brush and upholstery nozzle and they'll show up one of these days.

But, it also is missing the bag ring. If there is a sponge rubber donut under the swivel dome, it had a bag ring. Know what you mean about the bags - the ring adds that extra thickness over the bag edge that lets the clamps snug the top down as the donut presses the ring & paper bag to the cloth filter bag rubber rim.

If anyone has spare rings in any color metal or plastic I'd be interested, too. Without it stray dust whirl escapes past the lip and into the cover.

The floor tool with the aqua green one is gray and not the right color, I think, but close enough for now. The two nozzles down front came with the Salmon one but clearly neither matches either of my swiveltops. They are the concentric ring ribbed GE ones with their names on the sides. The dark olive green dust brush looks like a match to yours?

The sort of parts we hang on to until a matching vacuum comes along. :-)

Hi Louis, Hi Dave:

A - no the vacuum you have Louis did not come with a bag ring - the bag just folded over the rim

B - Dave - the grey flip over nozzle is the right one for the green machine. They didnt start matching the colors to the machine till the model after that. Up to that point all they used was grey parts (LOL and get busy and paint that dolly green instead of red)

Hi again Louis:

Was checking through my files and found a picture of that model I had saved so I thought I'd post it so you know what parts came with it. I may have extra of the small parts too - I'll have to check. I know I dont have the rug nozzle though.

That's really nice Louis! From Collector2s picture it seems to be a later swivel top, owing to the design of the rug nozzle. I seem to recall seeing one like it before. They had some really cool designs.

Alan...

...thank you and thanks for the consideration, as well. I cleaned up the machine superficially last night and it is in pretty decent shape. Though the hose looks good and even feels like brand new, I think there is some loss of suction but I am not sure. I have a brand new attachment set in the box for GE upright and the hose is the same, so I tried it and the suction was noticeably greater. That upright hose is the cheaper version which is just vinyl but it works well. The hose that came with it is like brand new and there is no obstruction so maybe it's beginning to collapse internally perhaps. Who knows.

But, I will say that if this machine did not come with the bag ring "thingy" it should have. Dave is right that dust does find its way under the lip and escapes without a ring in place. Maybe a plastic plate of some sort, like melamine" could be adapted. Of course, one would have to cut a hold in the center. Or even simply, a Solo plastic plate may work even better.

...Scott and Terry, I think that the machine is from the early 70's, possibly late 60's.

...Doug, thanks so much for that picture! Do you have the same model? And yes, if you have any extra tools or parts that go to this machine, I would love to buy them from you.

I have a quick question...

Hi,

Thanks for reading. I'm not on here much anymore, but I do have a question for you. Does this machine have a power nozzle port on it. I know around the time that machine was made, GE "briefly" offered a powerhead on their swivel top cleaners.

Just wondering...

Chad

Hi Chad!

To answer you question about whether or not there is an electrical port for a power nozzle...no there is not unfortunately. All I have to do now is search out some tools and a floor nozzle. Wish me luck!

Louis

My 1978 Canadian Tire Spring & Summer catalog has 4 versions of the swivel top.
Two without the power nozzle, economy and deluxe (cord winder)
Two with a power nozzle, the economy (no cord winder) and the Deluxe with cord winder.

About tools...

Louis,

Thanks for writing me back. I was just wondering about the PowerNozzle outlet, as I was sure that right around that time frame, and just slightly before GE left the US vacuum market, they had a Swivel-Top with a powerhead.

I myself had the rectangular General Electric canister from around this same time frame with the large square cord reel on the back a'la Electrolux. It also had the suction regulator on the canister hose connector part and had the toolkit hanging off the back of the cord reel too...

This was clearly built at the same time frame as Doug's machine above, as it was all the same color. Mine had all the green attachments, just like his, the top of the machine was covered in fake woodgrain, EXCEPT the rugtool which said nothing on it AND tho it was white.

And I mean CLOROX white. And it stuck out like a sore thumb.

Knowing that either it was a replacement, or from a different cleaner, I spray painted the rug tool the yellowy green that the machine is. It came off quite well actually, and to the eye at 5 paces looked like it belonged. It was a Krylon color and was available from ACO about three years ago. You may still be able to find it.

Clearly if you went that route, you would want to try it on something and let it dry before you go wholesale Like I did. That's if you find one that isn't the color that it's supposed to be of course.

My little GE canister was given away a year ago during one of my moves.

Good looking machine and great price..

Chad
I would LOVE to see that catalog page as well.
