These are the 1941 General Electric models launched right before World War II. The tank type has a unique bag system and named that model the "Air-flo". The upright allowed the new owner to choose a set of cleaning attachments OR the hand vac.

Very cool!

Did they continue to make these through the war or did they have to stop production? That color combination is very classy.

The only vacuum manufacturer allowed to make cleaners during the war for civilian use was Rexair (but you had to have a doctor's prescription). After the war, GE came out with a brand new, much longer tank type style. In 1948, they added the disposable bag (made of pressed cotton). In 1953, the Swivel Top canister style was launched and the tank-type GE went away.
