GE MV-1

New member here, and I'm enjoying looking at all your cool stuff! Have to wipe the drool off my keyboard...

I have a couple of questions I hope you experts can help me with. I just got a GE MV-1 vacuum (in the original box, yet!) that has all the accessories but two: the dusting brush, and the instruction manual.

I'm enjoying using the machine, but two things puzzle me. First, what is that metal clip on the back for? I'm guessing it's for one keeping one of the attachments handy?

Second, what is that clippy thing that swivels up from the handle? I'm guessing it has something to do with holding the cord, but that's just a guess. I think the later models of this vacuum didn't have it.

One of the reasons I bought this is because it was advertised on the original broadcast of "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer." Yeah, that's a weird reason to buy something, but that's me all over...

Welcome to our club. I'm not all that knowledgeable about machines that new, I tend to go for the old stuff. My General Electric machines are the Swivle top of 1952, Roll Easy circa 1957, and several of the early uprights from the 1930's. But I think the metal clip in bach was for holding the cord when not on use, or it could be a way to hang it on the wall in the closet.

Please drop me a note and let me know your interests as a collector, and what brands you like best. It might interest you to know that I'm the man who got the club started way back in 1980, though we didn't officially start till January of 1983.

Here's a look at our first logo, and I'll see what I can find out about the G.E.

Not only was this advertised by GE during the original broadcast of Rudolf in 1963/64, it was also on-stage along with scores of other GE products in the Christmas finale scene of the GE "Carousel of Progress" attraction at the 1964/65 New York World's Fair ...."....there's a great, big, beautiful tomorrow..."

I think the clips you are talking about are for the shoulder strap that came with the hand vac....

The swing out clip on handle is store hose.Connect hose to suction end,hang vac on hook or nail on wall with slot on bottom,bring other end of hose up(with or without att)and clip on.These did have shoulder strap but I think metal clip is for att such as dust brush.Good small vac that was later seen as Eureka Whisk and Oreck buster B.

Anyone remember the GE College Bowl? I watched it just for the ads.

I loved the G.E. Collage bowl, kind of like Jeopardy of the 1950's. The host was Allen Ludden. Don't remember him? He was the host of Password, and the late husband of actress Betty White. I loved watching the dark green G. E. Swivel top going between the road cones. And boy was I upset if they showed another appliance, not the vacuum cleaner. And speaking of game shows, Queen for a day gave away a Compact, and The Newlywed game gave away an Electrolux 1205. Talk about two insulting game shows!

That is neat! There is one for sale on ebay right now. I see it includes a shoulder strap but where does the strap hook onto the machine if not the metal hooks?

The strap hooks into the front and back of the handle. Sorry this isn't a great pic, but it gives you the basic idea.

Are brushes or a new motor available anywhere?
The old MV1 I have was pretty good in its day (about 40 years ago).

My GEMV1 Question..

Hi all! So I ended up with 2, a grey and a beige version.

From you experience have these ever had strong suction? The grey's motor died and I seem to remember neither has very strong suction.
