Great pictures Fred! I don't believe you had the GE electric carpet sweeper the last time I was there. I bet that is really fun to use. I always wanted my mom to get one but never talked her into it.LOL

Incredible brochure!

The green and white "roll about" canister is very much like the one I nearly got into hot water over when I snuck into my friend's house to see their new G.E. That one was a more deluxe model, though, as it was chrome and green instead of white and green, and had an automatic cord winder.

My heart STILL pounds a little when I think about just how much trouble I could have gotten into over that bit of mischief!!

GE Swivel Top

I have the chrome and green version of the swivel top with the tool caddy and cord winder. The tools and hose are white and the hose has the suction regulator with marks indicating the positions for rugs/floor, upholstery, dusting. Although the rug nozzle works OK I could never understand why they made it so wide since the air intake and 2 brushes only occupy half the space.

G E Vision in Chrome and Brown

Beautiful! But the one I was talking about was a little different - it was dark green and chrome instead of brown and chrome, but otherwise I'd say identical. It did have a white woven hose (green tracing) and white attachments.

Actually the vacuum is green and white but it came out looking brown in the pics. I'll have to see if I can get a better pic.

What's Up With That?

I have to admit something here:

Swivel-top GE's are one vac I NEVER "got". A roomie had one (green and white), and I didn't think it was any great shakes as a cleaner. I also hated its habit of falling over almost every time you tugged on the hose, due to its having only four casters. It really needed five, to make tipping less likely. I know there was a power nozzle version later on, but GE really seems to have taken its sweet time about it- all the ones I was ever around were straight-suction machines, and not anything I'd have written home about at that.

Can anyone help me understand the attraction these vacs have to some collectors? Is it just that it's a neat-looking design (which it is)? Does performance count for less when a vacuum reaches a collectible age- with the looks and nostalgia value counting for more than cleaning ability?

Is a puzzlement!

GE Swivel Top colour

Ooops! Wow was I wrong. My swivel top IS brown not green. I am colour blind in reds/greens and depending on the light conditions I sometimes see dark green as brown, brown as black, etc. (I have to sort my clothes by colour in the drawers and closet). I took the GE out last night for another pic, and put it in the bright light and couldn't believe that it was brown. I had another swivel top before this one. It was green though with chrome and had green tools. And instead of having the round chrome push button switch it had a chrome foot pedal in the front below the exhaust port. The only reason I got rid of it and bought the brown one was that it was in better condition.

Danemodsandy, you are right about the mobility of the swivel top. Mine only has 3 wheels and isn't the easiest to move about, especially on carpeting. I just like the looks of the machine, the swivel top connection, tool carrier and cord winder. The suction isn't too bad and I'm sure would be better if I replaced the woven hose with a rubber like one. The chrome wands seem larger in diameter also than other North American makes. I remember my mom's best friend had a similiar swivel top and I've wanted one ever since.

the attraction of the GE swivel top

for me is purely nostalgic. as a functional vacuum cleaner, I can't stand them. all the faults you point out Sandy, plus they're noisy and messy to change. (gee, sounds like a baby doesn't it, hahaha!).
