Hoover Encore service
The red base is a Hoover Encore. Would be early 90's these were seen in Best store catalogs years ago! The bag has been replaced. Normally the first 4 numbers of serial are date code, but I definitely think this machine is older than 1999. Perhaps someone can run model number and see if it matches this hood.
Disassembly requires flat head screw driver. There are notches on agitator base plate. Locate two notches on either side, stick in screw driver and release latch. Pull up on plate and rotate towards front of cleaner. There are no screws to remove in-order to take off base plate or hood on Elite/ Sprint/ Encore/ Futura/ Runabout/ Convertible/ Preferred, Turbo Power 1500, 1700, 2000, 2200 and other similarly branded machines of this style.
Then you must remove hood. While cleaner is still lying down. Locate 2 notches with arrows on both sides where red hood meets black base. Stick in flat head screw driver on notches and gently release latches connecting base to hood. It's easier to do one side, then the other, just watch that latches may be relock while rotating. Once all 4 are released, flip cleaner over and remove hood from back to front.
From there you can release belt from motor shaft and then pull out agitator on bottom side. No headlight on this model but there is a vent on top of motor and lots of lint collects there on these models. Handle and motor are attached via two motor mounts on either side-- 1 by motor pulley and one by fan chamber. Use Philips screwdriver to remove 2 screws on each and then bracket should release and you can separate components. Bag compartment is attached to motor via a long screw and nut at bottom of handle section. That can be removed.
Fans are supposed to be easy to service on these, however I've never needed to do so, so I've never taken one apart. Once agitator, belt and motor are released from base, there will be nothing electrical left in base and it can be soaked in the sink. Just dry very thoroughly and quickly so you don't rust height adjustment spring or wheel axles.
Agitator is 12" Elite style. Two types will fit. 48414079 is a single row bristle. 48414081 is a 2 row bristle. Only replace with genuine Hoover brush roll. The Elite style CWP is not good. If not replacing agitator, its a great idea to disassemble brush roll and clean and grease bearings or replace. Also check your washers. Washers are to be reassembled with middle sticking up and touching metal bottom of ball bearing. Bottom ends till touch plastic resting base in brush roll housing. Agitator should rotate very smooth, quiet, nonstop, no rubs when in proper running order. To disassemble agitator, grasp end caps firmly and turn in opposing directions. They will unscrew. Once shaft is pulled out of brush roll, you can firmly grasp shaft and end cap and unscrew. A rubber glove for grip may be helpful on shaft or in worst case scenario, a vice grip. in middle of shaft-- don't mar ends where end caps, washer and bearings go.
Type A bag-- can use new Hoover HEPA A bags, belt is 38528-027- old number. New style 38528-040. Only use genuine Hoover belt sized for that machine. Any other will not run properly.
In general these machines were decent cleaners that ran efficient requiring little to no service. My grandmom had a bagged Hoover Elite Supreme that she had for 17 years problem free. She moved and let it sell with the house to new owners. I checked and cleaned machine after she moved. It needed a new cord but other than that it cleaned and ran excellent.
Enjoy and best of luck!
