Found an Electrolux Super J, looking for info and appraisal.

Hi all, I came to these forums hoping to find someone who can tell me more about this Electrolux Super J vacuum cleaner and possibly the expected value from selling it. I'd imagine depending on the age that these aren't found new very often anymore. The box has been cut with a box cutter to make a lid rather than opened traditionally, but is still in good condition otherwise. Inside everything is new in the plastic still.

From what I can see from the pictures your Super J is a 1978 model, probably the last of the Super J models, new in 1978 if memory serves me it sold for $459.50. It will be interesting to see how much it goes for on eBay, I wouldn't be surprised if the sale doesn't exceed $800.00. Good luck with advertising it, keep us posted when your ready to sell it, I might be interested in it. It will probably need a new hose, the old cloth type hoses tended to dry out and leak over the years. Good Luck

Thanks for the info Charlie. I would actually expect that a collector who would buy this would want to retain it new as a display piece or something, rather than actually use it.

Nice find! But I don't see the aluminum wands, power nozzle wand, dusting brush and combination floor tool.

Charlie, The aluminum wands, the sheath and upper wand, and the lower wand were packed in the styrofoam under the top tray cardboard where the Power Nozzle is, but your right the rug and floor tool and combo tool should be in the cardboard accessory tray in the top. I would still like to see the condition of the machine out of the box and also see if the plug is still in the "shipping" position? When I first started working at the store that i eventually owned this was the first model of "New" Electrolux that I sold from there.

I do plan to sell it, I just want to get a few appraisals first. I'll probably be taking it to a couple antique dealers this weekend to get their opinion.

I doubt an antique dealer would know much about its value among collectors, or care for that matter.

Antique dealers would just look at you like you're out of your mind -- unless you bring one of the really early and primitive hand-pumpers made out of leather, wood and pot metal. And even then, most of them would only be peripherally interested.

I agree with Charles....

Unless its a very rare antique, most dealers wouldn't even give it a passing glance, especially a vacuum cleaner from the late 1970's that MANY are still in existance today; in fact I counted either eight or ten for sale on eBay just this morning. You have an advantage over most of the sellers simply because your machine is unused in the box, but my suggestion would be to let the bidders determine the worth of the vacuum. Not that long ago I watched a model 1205 that was brand new in the box with the lid cut open like yours sell for over $900. By the same token I have a 1205 brand new in the box that I got for a little over $100, so it really depends on how bad the bidders want it. If you have a figure in your head, then set a reserve price on it, that way it won't sell unless the reserve is met, and anything over the reserve, well that's just extra profit for you.
