Found this the other day at the local Habitat Restore.. It's a Canadian made model 118. Haven't tried it out yet nor given it a clean, plenty of cobwebs underneath and a lot of the brush bristles are long gone.. anyways.. what year do you figure,, mid to late 40's? Wonder also abut that big honkin metal plate screwed on the front with Hoover embossed into it.. not that pretty..

That is an odd looking duck, Pete. Cover plate hardly seems up to Hoover standards...must be the bol model that was not intended to accept the hose fitting.

I have two but they have a decorative curved clip-in plate for hose & belt access.

Your phone message said you found a Lark upright...I was so hoping it would be the Blue one with red trims.

This pic is Kenny Loveland's burgundy Lark.

Hoover 118

very interesting to see this model, especially if it was made (or perhaps just assembled) in Canada. The 119 was launched in the UK in 1950 but I believe the similar 115 (US) was on sale from about 1948 - definatly before us - so it could be from around there until the Lark 12 on which it was based was launched.

Of course the bag is not original (has it a paper bag? Or shakeout?) - I suspect this machine may have been made over by a vvac shop during its life and they have bodged a front cover for it, if the original was missing - it would have been metal so, if available, it would have been easy enough to re-spray if it looked tatty.

Al.. as it is now it has a bottom fill paper bag. It does say "Made In Canada" however back then that could have meant the same thing as todays "Assembled in Canada" since all those labelling rules/regs have changed over the years and continue to change.

Correction to my earlier post

When I said the 115/119 was based on the Lark 12, it should, of course, be the other way round. I only say assembled as I doubt it would be worth having the various metal and bakelite mouldings made for two countries given the much smaller sales volumes in US and Canada, not to mention the cable hooks being not being on the "normal" side of the handle. Dont forget too there is a model 376 - a Canadian version of the 375 which was, as far as I know, never sold in the US.

But whatever! It is still a great find and definatly a keeper - now what we need is for someone to post an ad for the cleaner so we can see what the bag etc. was like. It should be possible to get you brushroll strips as well, they are probably pretty rare in Canada

Al

Funny you should say about the cobwebs, as my '77 Senior gets cobwebs on the bottom all the time even though I use it regularly.

Must be the metal they are attracted to, or the gaps and holes perhaps...
