For Spats, Hoover Convertible lower bearing maintenance

Ok Spats, here you go. You'll need a large and small flat screwdriver to do this.

Get your Convertible taken apart down this far...

speed switch...

The speed switch is held in place by a small flat screw. Remove the screw and set it aside.

Once that screw is out...

Lift up the speed switch and remove the motor mount screw that holds the speed switch bracket in place.
This screw is the only motor mount screw that will have a little washer on it

Once the screw is out

This is what you should have: The screw and bracket, and the speed actuator(hockey stick)

now remove the other three motor mount screws

At each corner of the motor...once free, grab the motor and pick it up like this

Flip the motor over gently

and rest it in the fan chamber on the top bearing..

Now the fan will come off

Many variations on a theme

Everyone has their own system, this is mine.
Put your left hand on the fan as such, screwdriver on the belt pulley with your right.
This is a reverse thread... hold the fan firmly and turn the screwdriver til the belt pulley loosens.

it should come right off...

Paitence here, do not force anything!
Now that the fan is off clean under here thoroughly...

Is two spacer/washers, and a sleeve. The washers come off first, then pull the sleeve out.

greasing..

Again, everyone probably does this different than me. You'll want to put any lubricants in where I have the screwdriver.
I put in two drops of 3 in 1 oil, then pack the area where the sleeve was with a good bearing grease. Don't go crazy with it, just fill in the area where the sleeve came out from.

Once the grease is in, reassemble reversing the above procedure.

So that's how the switch comes off. Neat. I'll be finishing up that vac then shortly. I've been using 10W30 motor oil and general automotive grease.

On the handle, is there some kind of adjustment, or is it just worn a bit: When it is in the upright position on this vac I'm working on, there is a lot of play in it, and it does not rest straight up and down, like it leans back a bit.

Thanks for taking time to post this procedure. It does not need done often but it is maintenance that does eventually have to be done when that bearing starts to sound "dry". Once oiled, these machines just purr!

Jeff it appears your in the midst of restoring this cleaner's paint as well, but I notice the bag is yet another variation of the 1076/728 design. What model is this?

This is a full hood U4007. The base was left unpainted and the hood covered the entire body of the cleaner. This is an early version where they just used a standard Convertible base. Did you notice the indent for the Hoover emblem?

As Tom said, thats a full hood model U4007 from 1973. I chose that model because its the same as the one spats has, and had the questions about.

Oh of course, now I place the cleaner/hood/bag combo in my mind. Yes Tom, I did actually see the indent for the emblem, and that I think is what threw me into thinking it was a "regular hood" convertible that Jeff had stripped to repaint, which didn't seem unusual to me for someone experienced working with cleaners. I hadn't even stopped to consider full hood, and I'd never opened a full hood one, so I never realized some looked like that underneath!

Jeff, finally got around to doing the maintenance on the U4007. It sounds great now! And there was a bunch of packed dirt behind the fan. Thanks for the instructions

arent Convertibles just wonderful? after using a Dys@n Dc07 extensively for the first time coupla days ago, thank God for Convertible! anybody designing an all-new upright vacuum would be well advised to study the Convertible.
