Thrilled to be here! Always have found vacuums of particular interest in the machine world, and have a lot to tell about them.
There are two sides to my coin in regards to 'em; I've got waaay hypersensitive hearing, high pitches are particularly painful, but also I am autistic and vacs definitely qualify for special interest by now. During childhood there was an understanding among family that vacuums were purely a fear, and so they were kept away or used only when I wasn't around, and this served to create further intrigue towards them, but never enough to step beyond my own nerves and ears' limitations.
And then Henry... noise aside, they knew I loved Henry. He was the family PC's wallpaper for a bit! My earliest vac memory is of being drawn to a Henry box, the one with the fiery background, and I could not tell ya when that was but I believe that was the domino that led to fixation outweighing fear. Him and his endearing face...

Only later down the line did I start making an effort to endure the noise on my own time—exposure therapy through YouTube videos that may belong to some of y'all come to think of it—if that is so, you have my deepest thanks. Around then I found some vacs were less ear-hurty to listen to than others, and with that a greater bias for machines with two-stage motors and their lower hums was established, though I didn't know this by the proper terminology. Hey, Henry's one of 'em!
Soon I ordered from eBay a Henry HVR200A, with the wonderful slow rev-up and muuuuch much gentler whir, and the fixation positively took off from there. That was nine years ago... my vacuum fascination has only deepened since.
As of today I possess (listed in the order i got 'em):
- Henry HVR200A
- Miele Complete C2 Cat & Dog (lucky charity shop find, high pitchy hurty noise but worked quieter before being used bagless outside of my knowledge)
- SEBO Automatic X4 (a birfdee gift to meself 'cuz I had never used an upright before, they tend to be noisier... this one's loud but the sound itself is blissful)
- Dyson V7 Motorhead (found at a car boot sale, I was annoying enough when the vacuum needed plugged in, but now I can clean anywhere)
I've also got some manner of 80s PortaPower on the way, will have to figure out where to get bits and pieces, bags and filters for that.
Admittedly I'll still get caught off guard, jumpscared one might say, if a vacuum goes off unprompted. Just the difference now is I can't not find them super cool, they are the thing of discomfort semi-conquered and made my own, and I'll probably carry this fixation to the grave... lotsa cleaning in the meantime. Thank ya for reading! Will aim to make the next post less wordy, heh.
