the hardest thing on this job for me was refitting the flex its the origional although not rubber its pvc with the ribbing and still with that spring around the motor end a nightmare to get back inside the handle base

finally made a start

It was a simply amazing story ! Wonderful job ...and I also share 100% your idea of keeping one AS-IS and revamping the worst of the two, if you are lucky enough to have two of them. I did a similar job with a grey HOOVER 652A Senior ( well I have 9 HOOVER seniors at home, most of them are blue color but i also have the pink, the green ones ) but it was missing many parts and the chassis was much much damaged. So i felt free to dismantle it, repaint it, add the lost frontal lens ( bought as spares on internet ). The result is surprising anyway.
Listen : i have not understood one thing, would you be so kind to clarify : you painted the chassis with acrilic-spray paint many times but what did you use at the end ? Its a transparent paint also acrilic or what ? If i do it, is there the risk that it could make the previous paint "melt" together or ...I would like to know because - also - when i repainted my 1920's american HOOVER 541 I did not finish with such a treatment....maybe I should...thanks for your help ! GUIDO

the paint finish

hi Guido the gold paint i used is too bright [if you know what i mean ]so the last fiew coats are of clear spray paint which dulls down the gold making the final finish more like the Hoover origional colour the clear paint is simply clear celulose sprayed directly onto the dry gold paint as long as you allow the paint to dry there wont be a problem with the paint melting as you put it the clear paint also protects against bumps and knocks although this machine wont be doing much work now its going to have a well earned retirement after its years of good service

Our 60 (the one with the square handle and handle release at the top near the grip) was similar in base color to the Model 28 that followed it after the War. The Model 61 was a slightly darker color on the base, almost with a tinge of purple undertone. That one had a round handle and a standard handle release at the bottom of the handle. Both machines were "Hygienisac" models, using the Hoover reusable inner paper bag. They never did give us a gold-based one, unfortunately. </span>

You have done an amazing and beautiful job restoring this Hoover. Thank you for sharing all the details along with the pictures. You make it all look so easy.

To make the bag did you first use an old one to make a pattern? Did you use a special type of fabric? I would love a new cloth bag for my Hoover 800 and this looks like the way to go.

Hi Pdub and portable.

you have some amazing machines over there inthe states i never knew some of them existed till i joined this siteand i have been working with domestic apps for over 30 years would love to see some of them in the flesh so to speak its strange how over ther you had so many diffrent models and makes to choose from where as over here we had a limited choice not just vacuum cleaners but most electrical apps radios tvs and you have some
truly amazing looking washingmachines not to mention some of those fantastic console stereos [we call them radiograms over here ] I have just explained to a fellow member who has started a new thread about making bags if you look there you can read about how i did it and how i am about to atempt a bag for a pink 652 cheers guys Tony
