I saw this Craigslist-L.A. listing for a Filtex vacuum. (See link below.) While I wasn't particularly looking for one, this specimen appeared in the photo to be in nice condition. The leatherette was lighter in color than I'd seen before but thought maybe that was just bad contrast in the photo. So I went out to take a look at it and thought if it was really nice maybe I could bargain with the guy.
What a mess.
First off, the color looks odd because someone slopped pale yellow paint over the leatherette. The painting was done very unevenly and had chipped off in places, showing the leatherette underneath. I suppose the paint could be removed and the leatherette restored, but read on...
I tried out the motor. I sounded just fine, but the suction was pathetic. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, but it was as weak as an old lady's tea. Anyone who's had or used a Filtex knows they can "suck dry paint off the wall" as Hans Craig would say.
The metal hose coupler was wedged on so far that about 1/16th of an inch was protruding out from the inner side of the front cover. There's no way in hell that's ever going to come out again.
To top it off, he wasn't budging from his price. He said he's seen them on eBay for "hundreds of dollars." Well, I have never in 16 years as a member of eBay seen a single listing for this model. I've seen a few for the later ones but not this one.
So I just saved myself fifty bucks! Used it to get a new ceiling fan instead, which my bedroom desperately needs. We do not have air conditioning in our apartment, and my bedroom just gets as hot as hades in here. Even when there's nothing to get hot about, hahaha!
P.S.: Funny enough, the guy lives just off of HOOVER Street!!
