Filter Queen questions

Hey guys I need some advise on Filter Queens. I want to get one for my Dad. He needs a good vacuum and refuses to use bags. They have a dog and a dirt driveway. I thought an FQ would be better than the plastic junk of the week at Walmart.
I’m on a tight budget so that means an older machine. Is there anything special I should look for?
Also does anyone know much about the model history of FQs? (colors, features, production dates….)
I’d like to learn as much as I can about these machines. If one works well for my Dad, I will probably get into collecting them myself.

Hello, I have found Filter Queen to be one of the best vacuums to have, however they are not the best at filtering the air as they say. They are good but not the best at filtering air. Also depends on the carpeting your dad has. If he has thick 70's shagg then the little brushroll in the power head might not do very well, if the carpet is normal like the rest of us have then it would do fine. Any model would do just fine. Not many changes with the filter queen till just recently. They do make one with paper bags called the Optima. I here you should stay away from that but I have had them come through my store and I have no problem with them. If you have any trouble finding a nice one I have about six different models for sale.

I would go to ebay and look under vintage Vacuum cleaners I think that there were at least three there.

Hi! You better believe that a Filter Queen would be better than the plastic junk of the week at Wal-Mart. I have 2, a model 31 that belonged to my Great-Grandmother that is at least 45 years old and still runs like a top, and a model 112a 70th Anniversary Edition that I use as one of my daily drivers. If it were me, I'd look for one of the later model 31's in chocolate brown and chrome, or a model 95x Majestic that was black, gray, and chrome. Try looking on E-bay under Filter Queen vacuum cleaners. Best of luck and keep us posted. Later, Trg

Princess Models

Nicholas, there are also the gray Princess models that were sold in vac shops, basically the same thing except the dirt tub is plastic as well as the upholstery tool. It does make the machine a little bit lighter to handle. The Princess III was the final model and Healthmor upgraded the wheels to ball caster type and it also came with a 10 ft. hose. I use mine as my daily driver canister and it pulls 100 on the suction meter! I also have an early 31 with the power nozzle, but she stays up on the shelf, not that she wouldn't make a great daily driver too!

Filter queen all the way!!

Hello Nicholas. Go for a Filterqueen. There are a few options as far as purchasing one for a good price.($50 to $200). Option one would be ebay; type in "filter queen vacuum cleaners" , and you will find an abundance of F/Q to choose from.The brown and chrome models seem to be the best( like this one in the pic, my model 700, I paid $50 for this and it runs perfectly). Option two would be "Craigslist". If you find one locally on craigslist, make sure the hose is in good condition, and plug the vac in and try it out. Take the hose off at the canister and feel the suction, and then put it back on and feel the suction at the end of the hose.Listen to the motor as you turn on the vac and as you turn it off.The motor should produce strong sucton, and have a pleasant "Hummmm" to it.Once you get a Filter queen, the most effective way to keep it running for years to come, is to change(on a regular basis) the small round filter(size of a cd)that is located on the bottom of the motor inside the metal or plastic cone housing surrounding the motor.If you have any questions about your F/Q feel free to ask me. I have a question about the hoses. Do they all have the same ends? I have seen several different types on ebay, they look similar but will they interchange?

Update!

I just got the FQ on friday. It's a model 31. I took it all apart to clean it and I pulled out the fiberglass insulation stuff around the motor, it was nasty! Will it hurt to run it without this?
I got it all back together and I was amazed at what it pulled out of the carpet. This thing has some power!
The hose it came with was pretty petrified. So I cut off the end and put on an extra hoover hose. I've had it less than 24 hours and already made a frankenstein out of it! I'm thinking about getting a new non-electric hose and keep the outside wire. I'm not a huge fan of wires inside the hose.
Afterwards I took it over to my Mom & Dad's. We had to dump out the tub twice just doing part of the bedroom and part of the living room. The old Destiny just wasn't doing the job!
I like this one a lot. I told my Dad several times if he doesn't love this I will bring over my Rainbow and the FQ can live at my house.
